Ansu supplies ‘Star Rose’ within its Sansevieria range, and the cultivar name refers to the compact, rose-like arrangement of its broad leaves. Sansevieria remains familiar in horticulture, although botanists now include the group within Dracaena after DNA research clarified the relationship. Many former Sansevieria species were renamed under Dracaena in 2018.

Growing Dracaena ‘Star Rose’ indoors

• Water: Let the potting mix dry before watering. Apply water around the base, let the pot drain fully and keep water from collecting in the close-set centre.
• Light: A bright position with indirect light suits ‘Star Rose’ well, and light shade is also suitable. Gentle direct sun can be introduced gradually; protect the foliage from strong midday sun.
• Humidity: Low household humidity suits the succulent foliage. Keep the leaves dry and maintain good airflow around the centre.
• Potting mix: Choose a peat-free cactus or succulent mix that drains easily and a pot with drainage holes.
• Temperature: Keep the plant around 15–24°C and away from cold draughts and radiators.
• Slower growth: Lower light and cooler temperatures reduce water use, so let the mix dry for longer before watering again.
• Feeding: Give a liquid houseplant or cactus fertiliser about once a month when fresh growth is appearing.
• Repotting: A slightly larger pot is enough once roots and new shoots have filled the current container.
• Propagation: Separate a rooted offset at the rhizome or divide an established plant to keep the cultivar’s colouring and growth form.

Troubleshooting Dracaena ‘Star Rose’

• The centre or base turns soft: Moisture may have stayed around the plant for too long and caused rot. Remove the plant from its pot. With a clean, disinfected tool, cut away all soft or rotten tissue until only firm, healthy tissue remains. Discard the rotten material and repot in fresh mix that drains well.
• Leaves become wrinkled: Check the roots as well as the potting mix. Firm roots in dry mix are ready for a thorough watering. Soft roots in damp mix need attention before you water again.
• White cottony patches appear between close leaves: Inspect the centre and base for mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove visible insects and use a treatment labelled for indoor ornamental plants if needed. Repeat it only as directed on the label.

Dracaena: where the name comes from

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

Sansevieria remains common in horticulture. Pei-Luen Lu and Clifford Morden showed that it belongs within Dracaena in a 2014 DNA study in Systematic Botany, volume 39. James W. Byng and Maarten J. M. Christenhusz published many resulting Dracaena names in 2018 in Global Flora, volume 4.
