Disocactus ackermannii has broad green stems that become flattened, lightly serrated and leaf-like. Young primary growth may begin more rounded, while later sections widen into long flexible blades. Their smooth surface and shallow edge notches give the plant a cleaner outline than the deep fishbone cuts of Disocactus anguliger.
As the stems extend, they move from upright to arching and finally trail, often reaching 60 cm or more. Mature plants are known for large, vivid red flowers that open from the segment margins. Each bloom has many pointed petals arranged into a broad funnel, creating a concentrated burst of colour against the plain mid-green growth. The flowers open during the day and become the main feature of older specimens.
