Dieffenbachia ‘Cheetah’

Origin of Dieffenbachia ‘Cheetah’

Dieffenbachia ‘Cheetah’ is a cultivated selection of Dieffenbachia seguine, although its breeder and early introduction history are still unclear.

Dieffenbachia seguine occurs naturally from the Caribbean to southern tropical America.

Care for Dieffenbachia ‘Cheetah’

Warm, stable conditions around 18–27 °C suit it; 15 °C is the lower limit for prolonged exposure. Bright indirect light helps ‘Cheetah’ stay compact and well coloured without scorching the leaves. Keep it away from cold draughts and cold window glass.

Humidity and leaf cleaning: Keep the surrounding air in the 50–60% range. Give the foliage enough airflow for surface moisture to clear. Clean the speckled foliage occasionally.

Water and potting mix: When the surface of the mix has begun to dry and the container is clearly lighter than after watering, soak the pot thoroughly, then allow the excess to drain away. Keep the roots in a loose organic mix that releases surplus water readily and stays airy between waterings.

Feeding: Fertilise moderately while fresh leaves are unfolding, then reduce or stop feeding once growth slows.

Repot when the roots have used the available space, the mix begins draining slowly or the plant no longer stands securely. Use a bright filtered position without prolonged hot direct sun.

Propagation method: Use a healthy top cutting or sections of mature cane that contain nodes.

Troubleshooting ‘Cheetah’

• The yellow pattern is joined by many tiny pale dots or fine webbing — The normal speckles are larger and fixed; spider-mite damage appears as many tiny pale dots and may be accompanied by fine webbing. Check the undersides and veins, isolate the plant and rinse both sides of the leaves well. If mites remain, use a product labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamentals. The spider-mite guide can help confirm the signs.
• Tan or brown bumps stay fixed to veins or stems — Check whether they can be lifted away; fixed insects with possible sticky residue point to scale. Isolate the plant and remove a light infestation by hand. If scale persists, use an indoor-ornamental treatment labelled for scale and follow the label. The scale-insect guide covers identification and follow-up.
• Several leaves turn yellow and soft at the same time — Use the moisture in the pot to choose the response. If the root ball is dry, water it fully and let it drain. If it has stayed wet, remove any standing water, stop watering and allow the mix to dry. Continued yellowing while the pot remains wet is the point to inspect the roots for rot.
• Brown, crisp margins keep forming — Compare recent watering with fertiliser use and the position of heaters or cooling vents. Restore a more even watering rhythm, rinse the mix through with fresh water if salts may have accumulated, and reposition the plant so heated or cooled air does not blow across the leaves. Old damage will remain; improvement should show on later leaves.

Use gloves for pruning, cuttings and repotting. Dieffenbachia sap can irritate skin and eyes. Wash skin contact with soap and water for 15 minutes; rinse an affected eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persistent.

Background of ‘Cheetah’

‘Cheetah’ is a cultivated Dieffenbachia selected for its irregularly spotted foliage; the cultivar name reflects the cheetah-like pattern across the leaves.
