Dieffenbachia ‘Banana’

Cultivated origin of Dieffenbachia ‘Banana’

The horticultural name ‘Banana’ is used for this cultivated Dieffenbachia.

Caring for Dieffenbachia ‘Banana’

Light and temperature. Choose a bright indirect position near a window. Shield ‘Banana’ from hot midday or afternoon sun. Aim for roughly 18–27 °C indoors, avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C and keep the leaves away from cold glass and draughts.

Humidity and leaf cleaning. Normal room humidity is usually sufficient; aim for 50–60%. Persistently dry heated air can roughen the margins. Dust is especially visible on the pale leaves, so wipe them gently.

Watering and potting mix. Feel the mix and compare the pot’s weight with how it feels just after watering. Once the top is no longer wet and the pot has lightened, water thoroughly and let the excess drain. Choose a loose mix that retains some moisture and drains freely.

Feeding. Apply houseplant fertiliser at light strength while the plant is actively extending, then reduce feeding as activity drops.

Move to a fresh pot when the roots have used the available space, the mix begins draining slowly or the plant no longer stands securely. Give bright indirect or filtered light and protect the foliage from harsh direct sun.

Making new plants: Use a healthy top cutting or sections of mature cane that contain nodes.

Troubleshooting Dieffenbachia ‘Banana’

• Several leaves yellow or hang limply — Check the moisture in the pot first. A dry root ball should be watered thoroughly and drained; a pot that is still wet needs more drying time and a check that water can escape. If the yellowing continues in persistently wet mix, inspect the roots once and remove only tissue that is clearly dark, soft and rotten. The yellow-leaf guide helps narrow down other causes.
• Leaves develop translucent, water-soaked-looking patches after a cold spell — Treat this as cold damage. Shift ‘Banana’ away from open windows, cold glass and draughts, then keep the temperature steady. Because chilling can slow water use, feel the potting mix again before the next watering rather than assuming the plant is thirsty.
• Tiny pale dots spread across the leaves, sometimes with fine webbing — Look closely underneath the leaves and along the veins for spider mites. Isolate the plant, rinse both sides of the foliage well and inspect neighbouring plants. If mites remain, use only a product labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants and repeat it only as directed. See the spider-mite guide for the full process.
• New leaves stay small and the plant stretches towards the window — Follow the direction of the new growth. If it is reaching for the light, move the plant gradually to a brighter indirect position and turn the pot occasionally so the whole plant is lit. The existing stretched sections will stay as they are; look for stronger, better-spaced new leaves.

Wear gloves when cutting, repotting or handling damaged tissue. Dieffenbachia sap can irritate skin, eyes and the mouth. Wash exposed skin with soap and water for 15 minutes and rinse an affected eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes; seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or do not settle.
