Cyrtosperma sp. Papua is an unidentified Cyrtosperma grown under the nursery name “Papua”. The label gives no precise wild locality, and its natural range is unknown.

Arrow-shaped leaves with cream to pink variegation identify the cultivated form. Fine freckles, larger warm-coloured patches and strong veins recur across successive leaves.

Care through leafy growth and seasonal change

Temperature

Give the variegated plant very strong filtered light, near gentle morning light from an east window or beneath a strong grow light that does not heat the leaf. A little early sun is acceptable once the variegated Papua Cyrtosperma is established.

An airy, water-holding root mix

Pot the variegated Papua Cyrtosperma in a rich, loose mix that absorbs water evenly and drains freely. Because the pot is watered frequently, rinse fertiliser and hard-water residue away before it accumulates.

Humidity for opening variegated leaves

Moderate to high humidity helps the broad variegated leaf open without catching or browning. In a drier room, use a humidifier with gentle air movement and keep the plant open to room air.

Feeding

Use a complete fertiliser at the low end of the product-label rate while the variegated Papua Cyrtosperma is producing roots or leaves. Continue in winter only if the plant remains warm, bright and visibly active.

Scattered pink patterning on the green arrow-shaped leaves is normal for this plant. Healthy flecks are flat, firm and stable. Damage is more likely when a mark becomes translucent, brown, wet-feeling or larger. Avoid cutting out healthy pink tissue or claiming that colour alone indicates disease.

A new leaf carries little or no pink

Variegation can vary between leaves, so wait for the blade to harden and compare several growths. Give bright filtered light to support compact growth, but do not assume light can restore a genetically plain shoot. If an all-green shoot repeatedly outgrows the patterned growth, prune it before it dominates the clump.

Leaves crease as they emerge from the dense cluster

Short petioles hold the blades close together, so an expanding leaf can rub against its neighbours or dry while rolled. Give the cluster space, warmth and steady root moisture and let the leaf open unaided. Blackening at the folded base or a loose spear requires an immediate crown check.

Pink and green tissue develops expanding wet spots

Water-soaked lesions that cross both colours may indicate leaf disease. Quarantine the plant, direct water below the dense canopy and remove a severely affected blade with clean tools. Inspect the tightly clustered petiole bases because decay can remain hidden there.

The short crown softens in cold wet media

Keep the mix evenly moist, warm and aerated; do not submerge the pot or leave the roots in stagnant water. Remove foul or decomposing material, trim soft roots and rhizome and reset firm tissue in fresh airy media. A bad smell or central growth point that pulls away means the damage is advanced.
