Origin and background of Ctenanthe oppenheimiana

Ctenanthe oppenheimiana is native to Bahia in northeastern Brazil and belongs to the seasonally dry tropical biome. Plants sold with the descriptive trade word ‘Tricolour’ belong to this species. The additional word refers to the foliage colours and does not identify a separate cultivar here.

Place this tall Ctenanthe in strong filtered daylight near a large east window or set back from intense south and west sun. When light is inadequate, the long leaf stalks lean and weaken, the clump opens and the cream striping loses definition.

Avoid adding more water automatically. Cold, saturated or damaged roots cannot supply the large leaf area and can mimic drought. Slide out the root ball, remove brown mushy roots and repot firm rhizomes in an aerated mix. A sour smell or soft rhizome makes this an urgent intervention.

What does the name Ctenanthe oppenheimiana mean?

Ctenanthe combines Greek kteis, meaning comb, with anthos, meaning flower. Oppenheimiana honours Baron Édouard Oppenheim, president of the general committee for the International Horticultural Exhibition in Cologne.

August Wilhelm Eichler established the genus Ctenanthe in 1884 in Abhandlungen der Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, volume 1884, page 81.

Charles Jacques Édouard Morren first described it as Calathea oppenheimiana in 1875 in Annales de Botanique et d’Horticulture, volume 25, page 271. Karl Moritz Schumann later placed it in Ctenanthe as Ctenanthe oppenheimiana in 1902 in Das Pflanzenreich, IV, 48, page 153.
