Cissus discolor 'Violet Vine' is a warm-growing selection of Cissus discolor with slender climbing stems, red-toned tendrils, and strongly coloured leaves. The foliage carries green and silver-pink patterning across the upper surface, while the violet-purple undersides show clearly when the stems hang or climb.
Its thin leaves need steady moisture and bright filtered light, while a trellis or pole gives tendrils a route upward. In a hanging pot, the flexible stems twist downward and reveal more of the purple leaf backs.
The species behind this selection, Cissus discolor, is native from southern Central China to tropical Asia and grows as a liana in wet tropical conditions. Indoors, Cissus discolor 'Violet Vine' keeps that climbing character on a smaller scale, using tendrils to attach to nearby surfaces.
Unsupported stems hang and twist, showing the coloured undersides more clearly. Regular tip pruning encourages side shoots and helps keep the plant fuller near the pot.
New leaves show the strongest contrast when the plant is warm, bright and evenly moist. Older leaves naturally darken and may lose some surface contrast as they age.
Guide Cissus discolor 'Violet Vine' while the stems are young, because fresh shoots bend more easily than older, firmer growth. A slim trellis or hanging position keeps the coloured leaf backs visible while leaving space for new shoots.
ASPCA lists Rex Begonia Vine as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep Cissus discolor 'Violet Vine' beyond the reach of pets and children that may pull at the stems.
The botanical species behind this plant is Cissus discolor Blume in the grape family, Vitaceae. Cissus comes from the Greek kissos, meaning ivy. The species epithet discolor means two-coloured, referring to the contrast between the upper leaf surface and purple underside.
Cissus discolor 'Violet Vine' develops violet leaf backs, red tendrils and slim stems that climb or trail from the pot.
