Cissus alata ‘Ellen Danica’ is a grape ivy with glossy deep-green leaves divided into three sharply cut leaflets. Their strongly toothed, oak-like edges give the foliage a much more intricate outline than the species’ simpler diamond-shaped form. Fine reddish-brown hairs cover the young stems and leaf undersides, adding a soft texture beneath the polished upper surface.
Forked tendrils emerge opposite the leaves and curl around any support they reach. Unsupported stems arch and trail, while guided growth climbs and branches into a broad leafy framework. New shoots are soft and green; older sections become firmer and increasingly woody, allowing the vine to extend several metres. Each branch adds more groups of three dark leaflets, with their deeply cut edges remaining crisp even as the vine thickens.
