Cissus alata 'Ellen Danica' is a compact grape ivy with glossy divided leaves, slender tendrils and stems that can trail or climb. It is also sold as Cissus rhombifolia 'Ellen Danica'. Each leaf is usually divided into three leaflets, with more deeply cut edges than many grape ivy forms.
Forked tendrils appear along the stems and help the plant grip a slim trellis or frame. Older stems may become slightly woody at the base, while new shoots usually carry the freshest leaves.
Cissus alata belongs to the grape family, Vitaceae. It is native from Mexico through Central America into South America and Trinidad, where it grows as a tropical liana.
'Ellen Danica' is a cultivated form with compact, bushy growth and more finely divided leaf edges. Small greenish flowers and dark berries are part of the species’ natural growth cycle, but they are uncommon indoors.
This plant grows from flexible stems rather than from a single central crown. Regular trimming keeps it full near the pot. If all stems are left to run, the ends can stay leafy while the base becomes thinner.
It can be grown two ways: let the stems trail naturally, or guide the tendrils onto a slim support. A heavy moss pole is not necessary; the plant has fine tendrils and lighter stems, so a small trellis or frame is usually enough.
Grape ivy is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Ingested leaves may still upset sensitive stomachs, so keep damaged trailing growth away from pets that nibble plants.
Cissus comes from the Greek word kissos, meaning ivy. The species epithet alata means winged. Cissus rhombifolia is a synonym still used for this plant in horticulture.
