Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum’ has broad arching green leaves edged by clear white margins. The blades are smooth, flexible and substantially longer than those of compact ‘Ocean’, forming a loose fountain whose pale borders remain visible through every curve. Green flower stems extend from between the foliage.
Tiny six-petalled white flowers open at intervals along these branching stems. Small plantlets then form near their ends, developing narrow striped leaves and aerial roots while attached to the parent. The stems bend farther as these rosettes gain weight, producing the familiar spider-like fall around the pot. This cultivar usually makes fewer plantlets than some centre-striped forms, so the mature display retains a strong balance between its long white-edged leaves and the smaller hanging offspring.
