Borneoa scortechinii

A Peninsular Malaysian aroid from the shaded forest floor

Borneoa scortechinii is native to Peninsular Malaysia and was formerly called Schismatoglottis scortechinii. It belongs to a recently separated group of terrestrial aroids, with leaves and flowering structures emerging close to the forest floor.

Its background is warm, humid rainforest, where overhead trees soften direct sun and recurring rain feeds a deep layer of roots and decomposing leaves. Air movement is gentle below the canopy, and the ground remains buffered from the strongest heat. The plant's foliage occupies this sheltered space among other low forest vegetation.

Propagation and root care

Allow Borneoa scortechinii to grow as an unsupported clump. Remove a spent leaf by cutting its stalk near the base rather than tugging it from the rhizome.

Watering

Keep the plant evenly moist without leaving it in stale water. Prolonged dryness can collapse a leaf and kill fine root tips, whereas permanently muddy substrate damages the rhizome and roots.

Light

Give Borneoa scortechinii medium to strong filtered daylight near an east window or set back from a large south or west window. Deep shade weakens the leaf stalks and reduces leaf size; hot direct rays can mark the broad surface before the root ball has time to dry.

Temperature

Warm roots and an even night temperature are particularly important after repotting or while new roots are forming.

Humidity and airflow

Moderate to high humidity helps Borneoa scortechinii open thin leaves without dry margins. In heated-room air, raise humidity with gentle circulation rather than compensating by keeping the root ball wetter.

Fertilising

Give Borneoa scortechinii a low dose of complete foliage fertiliser during visible root and leaf growth. Fresh enriched mix, moderate light or slow drying calls for less.

Diagnosing problems in Borneoa scortechinii

The mottled leaf pattern looks newly damaged

Healthy Borneoa scortechinii can vary in mottling from leaf to leaf. Damage is more likely when a mark is expanding, soft, sharply bleached or accompanied by insects. Compare several established leaves and photograph the suspect area before treating a stable part of the natural pattern.

The creeping shoot stops producing full-sized leaves

Repeatedly smaller leaves can follow weak filtered light, cool conditions or a compacted root zone. Check that the horizontal stem is resting at the surface and that its fine roots still receive air. Correct the limiting condition before adding fertiliser, which will not repair cold or damaged roots.

Leaves droop although the enclosure is humid

Humid air does not confirm that the roots are hydrated. Dry substrate calls for a thorough watering and drainage; wet substrate with persistent wilt suggests poor aeration or root loss. Inspect beneath the creeping stem and remove any brown, soft roots before refreshing the mix.

A dark patch spreads along the horizontal stem

Progressive softness or water-soaking is a serious rhizome-rot warning. Cut ahead of the dark boundary into uniformly firm tissue, remove contaminated substrate and restart the sound section with the growing point exposed. Increase ventilation so moisture does not remain trapped around the creeping crown.

New leaves open with silver scars and black specks

This combination is consistent with thrips feeding inside folded growth, not ordinary mottling. Isolate Borneoa scortechinii, inspect the newest leaf and petiole sheath with magnification and complete a labelled thrips treatment. Remove only growth too damaged to function.

Borneoa scortechinii is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

About the name Borneoa scortechinii

The genus name Borneoa refers to Borneo. Scortechinii honours Benedetto Scortechini.

Sin Yeng Wong and Peter Charles Boyce established the genus Borneoa in 2024 in Journal of Plant Taxonomy and Geography (Webbia), volume 79, page 266.

Joseph Dalton Hooker first described it as Schismatoglottis scortechinii in 1893 in The Flora of British India, volume 6, page 537. Sin Yeng Wong and Peter Charles Boyce later placed it in Borneoa as Borneoa scortechinii in 2024 in Journal of Plant Taxonomy and Geography (Webbia), volume 79, page 269.
