Begonia listada

A Paraguayan shrub of moist forest understorey

Begonia listada is native to Paraguay and grows as a terrestrial subshrub or shrub in the wet tropical biome. Its striped leaves are carried on branching stems among moist, shaded forest vegetation.

Reports from Argentina and Brazil have circulated in botanical gardens and horticulture, while Paraguay remains the consistently accepted native range. The exact collection locality is unknown, so the useful habitat picture is a humid, sheltered forest understorey with regular moisture and filtered light.

Let Begonia listada form a low, bushy mound in a wide pot, arch from a hanging pot or follow a small trellis. Remove dry leaf stalks and old flowers cleanly without tearing live stem tissue.

Light

Give Begonia listada a position close to an east or north-east window, or just outside the direct beam of a brighter south or west window. Acclimate it gradually, since sudden intense exposure means the hairy blades develop permanent pale or crisp areas.

Watering

Begonia listada is ready for water when the upper layer of the substrate has dried and the pot feels lighter, while some moisture remains deeper down. A hanging Begonia listada may dry first along the exposed side of the pot, so test more than one point before watering.

Humidity and airflow

Keep the humidity around Begonia listada steady. Keep air moving around the low stems of the plant, where overlapping velvety leaves can otherwise stay damp.

Fertilising

Apply a complete foliage feed at a low dose to Begonia listada only while the plant is growing actively. Begonia roots are sensitive to concentrated salts, so avoid strong doses and fertilise only after the root ball is moist.

Bright central stripe turns yellow or brown

The light midrib stripe is normal. Irregular colour spreading beyond it or a loss of firmness indicates damage. A dry, crisp stripe and margin usually follow dehydration or heat. A translucent spreading mark suggests leaf spot. Check the root ball, keep the velvety foliage dry and isolate if lesions enlarge.

Velvety leaves curl lengthwise

A dry root ball or hot airflow can roll the narrow succulent leaves, but roots failing in wet mix can produce the same response. Lift the pot and inspect below the surface before watering. Restore moderate moisture and stable warmth; avoid using permanently saturated soil to compensate for dry air.

Shrub becomes sparse and weak

Look along each upright stem for leaves that still carry a clean lime central stripe. If the tips remain firm but the gaps below them widen, give the shrub brighter filtered light and pinch one leader to stimulate side branches. Cut away a blackening stem base and root a healthy upper section.

Brown spots spread through the hairy surface

The velvety blade can hide the wet edge of a lesion beside its lime stripe. Part the hairs in good light. An old bruise is dry and fixed; an active spot stays soft and enlarges across the dark green surface. Remove that leaf and improve spacing around the upright stems.

New striped leaves emerge scarred

Look along the pale midrib and red-backed underside for thrips, mites or mealybugs. Thrips scars are irregular and often carry black specks; mites cause fine stippling or distortion; mealybugs collect at nodes. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and use the appropriate treatment.

Begonia honours Michel Bégon. The Portuguese and Spanish adjective listada means striped and refers to the bright green stripe along the midrib.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Begonia in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1056.

Lyman Bradford Smith and Dieter Carl Wasshausen first described Begonia listada in 1981 in Begonian, volume 48, page 155.
