A Paraguayan shrub of moist forest understorey

Begonia listada is native to Paraguay and grows as a terrestrial subshrub or shrub in the wet tropical biome. Its striped leaves are carried on branching stems among moist, shaded forest vegetation.

Reports from Argentina and Brazil have circulated in botanical gardens and horticulture, while Paraguay remains the consistently accepted native range. The exact collection locality is unknown, so the useful habitat picture is a humid, sheltered forest understorey with regular moisture and filtered light.

How to keep Begonia listada healthy

Light

Give Begonia listada a position close to an east or north-east window, or just outside the direct beam of a brighter south or west window. Acclimate it gradually, since sudden intense exposure means the hairy blades develop permanent pale or crisp areas. Move it closer to the window if the stems lengthen with bare gaps and the median leaf markings lose contrast. The markings are genetically fixed, while stronger light increases the risk of scorch. Healthy leaves naturally show the bright median stripe on the dark velvety blade. Give enough light for firm compact growth, but do not use hot sun in an attempt to strengthen the pattern.

Watering

Begonia listada is ready for water when the top 2 cm has dried and the pot feels lighter, while some moisture remains deeper down. Rewet the complete root zone in one pass and remove every pool of runoff afterward. Water that remains around the low stems encourages weak bases and low-oxygen roots. The fine roots and soft horizontal stems dislike a prolonged dry root ball, which causes leaf drop from older nodes. A hanging listada may dry first along the exposed side of the pot, so test more than one point before watering. Active growth, warm airflow and terracotta dry the mix faster than cool light, dense substrate or plastic.

Substrate and roots

The root structure of Begonia listada is fine fibrous roots along a low, somewhat horizontal branching plant. For an even balance of air and moisture, use a light, evenly wetting Begonia mix of coir or peat-free substrate, small bark and perlite or pumice. Heavy compost stays wet beneath the creeping stems, while very coarse bark dries the small roots unevenly. A modest hanging pot or low stable container with free drainage suits the spreading root system. Keep low stems of listada above the mix so they are not held against a permanently damp surface.

Temperature

Aim for stable temperatures around 18–27 °C for Begonia listada, using 15 °C as the lower limit. Pull the plant away from cold windows at night, especially while the substrate is still moist. A heater under the sill creates uneven drying and can desiccate the window-facing leaves.

Humidity and airflow

Keep the humidity around Begonia listada steady. A stable 55–70% humidity suits the velvety foliage, although an established plant can adapt to ordinary room air away from heaters. Keep air moving around the low stems of listada, where overlapping velvety leaves can otherwise stay damp. Good spacing is as important as humidity, particularly around a dense crown.

Fertilising

Apply a complete foliage feed at one-quarter to one-third strength every four to five weeks to Begonia listada only while the plant is growing actively. Use the lower concentration for slow growth and the higher end only when light, warmth and root activity are all strong. Begonia roots are sensitive to concentrated salts, so avoid strong doses and fertilise only after the root ball is moist. A modest dose keeps listada leafy along its stems without producing weak, widely spaced growth.

Repotting

Give Begonia listada a new pot when roots crowd the hanging pot, water channels down one side, spreading stems overwhelm the rim or the mix collapses. Choose one about 2–3 cm wider while keeping drainage and root depth appropriate. Keep the fine root ball intact and support long stems ; lift the plant by its pot or root ball. Time the work for active root growth, then return the plant to its familiar light level. Lift listada by the root ball and pot, supporting every long stem separately.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Let Begonia listada arch from a hanging pot, or guide its flexible horizontal stems up a small trellis. Pinching one tip above a leafy node produces a denser display of striped leaves. Guide new growth while it is flexible and make only gradual changes to the pot's orientation. Do not wipe the velvety green leaves with a bright central stripe of Begonia listada. Rubbing flattens the hairs and leaves marks. Remove dust with a soft dry brush or a gentle rinse followed by quick airflow. Remove dry leaf stalks and old flowers cleanly, without peeling live tissue from a cane or rhizome.

Common concerns with Begonia listada

Bright central stripe turns yellow or brown

The light midrib stripe is normal. Irregular colour spreading beyond it or a loss of firmness indicates damage. A dry, crisp stripe and margin usually follow dehydration or heat. A translucent spreading mark suggests leaf spot. Check the root ball, keep the velvety foliage dry and isolate if lesions enlarge.

Velvety leaves curl lengthwise

A dry root ball or hot airflow can roll the narrow succulent leaves, but roots failing in wet mix can produce the same response. Lift the pot and inspect below the surface before watering. Restore moderate moisture and stable warmth; avoid using permanently saturated soil to compensate for dry air.

Shrub becomes sparse and weak

Look along each upright stem for leaves that still carry a clean lime central stripe. If the tips remain firm but the gaps below them widen, give the shrub brighter filtered light and pinch one leader to stimulate side branches. Cut away a blackening stem base and root a healthy upper section.

Brown spots spread through the hairy surface

The velvety blade can hide the wet edge of a lesion beside its lime stripe. Part the hairs in good light. An old bruise is dry and fixed; an active spot stays soft and enlarges across the dark green surface. Remove that leaf and improve spacing around the upright stems.

New striped leaves emerge scarred

Look along the pale midrib and red-backed underside for thrips, mites or mealybugs. Thrips scars are irregular and often carry black specks; mites cause fine stippling or distortion; mealybugs collect at nodes. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and use the appropriate treatment.

Growing Begonia listada in a home with pets

Begonia listada, including its narrow dark velvet blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; roots and buried tissue contain the largest share of the toxic principle. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

The striped begonia

The word listada is Spanish and Portuguese for striped or banded. It refers to the bright green stripe that follows the midrib of each otherwise dark leaf.

Lyman B. Smith and Dieter C. Wasshausen described Begonia listada in 1981. The South American species carries the Portuguese and Spanish adjective listada, meaning striped.
