‘Crispy Wave’ is a compact bird’s-nest fern with narrow upright fronds and deeply rippled margins. The glossy green blades are firm and corrugated, creating repeated waves from the dark midrib to the outer edge.
New fronds uncurl from the centre as pale, relatively smooth spears. Their edges become increasingly crimped as they lengthen and harden, while older blades arch around the upright centre. The plant develops a dense three-dimensional rosette. In the patent comparison, 18-month plants in 10.5 cm pots measured about 20 cm high and 26 cm across; older plants can become larger as successive fronds accumulate. The oldest fronds carry the deepest edge waves and form a broad corrugated layer around the paler centre.
