New leaves often open bronze to reddish brown and become much darker with age.
Mature growth develops broad spade or heart-shaped leaves with deep lobes and a heavy texture. Older plants can reach around 60–80 cm across. Seedlings may differ in width, darkness and vein contrast, but the cross is expected to combine papillilaminum’s dense velvet with the broad mature proportions associated with ‘Ace of Spades’.
Young leaves can open burgundy, copper or dark red before becoming black-green velvet. The surface is dense and soft, with pale veins that strengthen as the blade hardens.
