New leaves on this Panamanian species can open metallic pink to light brown before changing to green.
The petioles develop seven to nine distinct ribs or wings, providing a structural identity character below the leaf. Older plants also form a sturdy base surrounded by persistent brown fibres. Mature specimens can reach around 90 cm high and wide, and the combination of rounded textured blades, ribbed petioles and fibrous basal material becomes increasingly pronounced with age.
Anthurium kunayalense develops broad blades that become almost circular in mature outline, with a narrow opening between the basal lobes. Young leaves are softer and lighter. Mature foliage becomes darker, subvelvety and strongly textured, with raised and impressed tissue creating far more relief than a smooth green blade. As they harden, the surface becomes softly velvety and more strongly ribbed, while the plant retains a compact growth habit.
