The foliage can reach substantial proportions on an older plant, with long tips and gently curved margins. Its velvet is quieter than the bright silver patterning of crystallinum, allowing the dark colour and length of the blade to dominate. Indoor plants can eventually approach 80 cm in height and spread. Fresh foliage opens lighter and becomes firmer as the broad triangular blade expands.
Mature leaves reach around 42–59 cm long, with a dark velvety upper surface and a softly glossy reddish-green underside. Anthurium esmeraldense has elongated, dark green leaves with a soft velvet surface and understated veins. Young blades are lighter, thinner and comparatively narrow. Mature leaves gain width, deeper colour and a firmer texture while keeping their extended shape.
