The known parent grows terrestrially in deeply shaded lowland wet and premontane rain forest from Panama into the Pacific side of Colombia and Ecuador, including sites around 30–200 m. That habitat explains one side of the lineage, while the hybrid’s complete ecological inheritance must be read from its individual growth as the second parent remains open.

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Dressleri honours the American botanist and orchid specialist Robert L. Dressler. Thomas B. Croat described Anthurium dressleri in 1978 in Aroideana 1: 54–56.

The cultivated hybrid name records Anthurium dressleri as one parent. The second parent has not been preserved in the available lineage, so “dressleri hybrid” keeps that part of the formula openly unassigned while retaining the documented parent.
