Natural origin of Anthurium crystallinum

Anthurium crystallinum is native from Panama to Colombia and grows mainly as an epiphytic subshrub in wet tropical forest.

Linden and André published the species in 1873.

Caring for Anthurium crystallinum

• Use bright filtered light: Screen strong midday sun and keep the leaves away from heated glass, which can leave permanent pale or tan patches.
• Maintain an airy epiphytic root zone: Check the mix at the surface and just below it. When both are starting to dry, soak the root ball evenly and let the pot drain; fine bark, coco and mineral particles help the roots stay aerated.
• Give the new leaf an open path: Keep walls and older foliage away from the soft blade and allow any rolled edge to release naturally.
• Clean mature velvet gently: Remove dry dust with a soft brush. Increase pot size only after active roots have occupied most of the container.

Troubleshooting Anthurium crystallinum

• A new leaf remains partly rolled or opens creased: The soft blade may have met an obstruction or a sharp change in root moisture. Clear the surrounding space, keep the leaf attached and judge improvement from the next growth cycle.
• A pale tan area develops on the window-facing side: Direct sun or heated glass has scorched the velvet surface. Increase the distance from the window or diffuse the direct sun; the existing patch will remain.
• Leaves yellow while the pot remains wet: Delay watering and move the plant away from cold glass or draughts. If the mix stays dense and drains slowly, clear blocked drainage holes and replace it only when its structure has broken down. If yellowing spreads, the central stem softens or a sour smell develops, lift the root ball from the pot and inspect the roots before deciding whether to return or repot the plant. Keep every firm root intact. If all roots are firm, return the plant to the pot in the unchanged mix, provided it remains airy and drains freely. How did Anthurium crystallinum get its name?

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. The epithet crystallinum is Latin for crystalline, referring to the bright, crystal-like leaf veins.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Anthurium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard-François André first described Anthurium crystallinum in 1873 in Catalogue Général, volume 90, plate 128.
