Anoectochilus brevilabris

A mountain jewel orchid from Nepal to Yunnan

Anoectochilus brevilabris is a terrestrial jewel orchid native from Nepal through the eastern Himalaya to Yunnan in south-western China. A recent revision separated several similar orchids that older sources had included within a much broader concept of this species.

Natural plants occupy humid mountain forest in moss, leaf litter and rich surface humus beneath dense vegetation. Recurring rain and mist maintain the shallow rooting layer, while the canopy filters direct sun before it reaches the small velvety leaves.

How to keep Anoectochilus brevilabris healthy

Light

Keep Anoectochilus brevilabris in low to moderate filtered light, which in a home means near a north window or within about 1 m of an east window. Farther from the glass, check that the plant still sees a broad patch of sky. Direct midday and afternoon sun can burn the textured leaves. In insufficient light, the stem lengthens and new leaves become smaller. Its pale pattern remains inherited rather than controlled by sun exposure.

Watering

Check Anoectochilus brevilabris frequently and water when the surface is just dry to the touch, before the small root ball dries through. Apply enough low-mineral water to wet every side, then empty the saucer. Severe dryness kills delicate roots and wrinkles the thin leaves. Permanently waterlogged substrate deprives the creeping stem base of oxygen. Pot material, airflow, light and temperature can change the interval more than the season itself.

Substrate and roots

Anoectochilus brevilabris needs a shallow, moisture-retentive substrate with plentiful air. Combine fine bark and chopped sphagnum with coir or quality fine potting material plus perlite or pumice. The roots are thin and spread close to the surface, so large dry chunks and compressed moss both cause problems. Use a small pot with reliable drainage, lay the creeping stem at the surface and prevent soluble salts from collecting in the mix.

Temperature

Keep Anoectochilus brevilabris in stable warmth around 20–28 °C and above about 17 °C. A brief mild night drop is safer than several cool days in saturated mix. Move the plant away from icy panes, exterior-door draughts and air-conditioning. A radiator may dry the soft leaf edge while the centre stays moist. New cuttings and freshly repotted roots are especially sensitive to sudden temperature changes.

Humidity and airflow

Moderately high humidity, roughly 65–80%, meaningfully improves Anoectochilus brevilabris. It supports active surface roots and reduces dry margins on the thin leaves. Humidity without air exchange is unsafe, so ventilate a cabinet and avoid packing plants tightly together. Routine misting is unnecessary and may mark the patterned blade. If ordinary household air remains below this range, a small humidifier or ventilated terrarium is more useful.

Fertilising

Anoectochilus brevilabris needs small, regular amounts of nutrition rather than a strong dose. Use a complete orchid fertiliser at one-eighth to one-quarter strength every four to six weeks while leaves and roots are forming. A warm active winter plant can still be fed lightly. Reduce when growth stalls. Never apply concentrate to dry mix, and run low-mineral water through the pot periodically to remove residue from the salt-sensitive roots.

Repotting

Move Anoectochilus brevilabris to a new shallow pot when roots crowd the container, the surface stem reaches the rim or the mix remains unevenly wet. Increase the diameter slightly rather than adding depth. Support the delicate root ball from beneath and remove only dead roots or loose degraded material. Work during active warm growth, keep the stem visible and separate a piece only where it already has roots of its own.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Anoectochilus brevilabris remains small and surface-running; allow its short stem to build a connected patch instead of separating each new node too early. Allow the creeping shoot to root where it crosses the substrate. Use a loose U-shaped pin if guidance is needed, without pressing the stem into wet mix. Remove damaged growth with a clean cut. The velvety blades bruise under cloths, so lift dust with a soft brush instead of rubbing.

Slow growth, gold veining and a terminal flower spike

• Dark oval leaves carry fine gold-to-copper reticulation: That warm lace-like pattern and a darker red-green underside belong to Anoectochilus brevilabris. Healthy markings stay within firm velvet; greasy or translucent patches indicate damaged tissue.
• The plant remains small and advances slowly: An unhurried, low habit is normal for this eastern Himalayan jewel orchid. Check that the surface stem is firm and occasionally rooting before trying to accelerate it with stronger light or heavy feeding.
• A flower spike ends the current shoot: Terminal flowering means that particular tip will not return to leaf production. Remove the dry spent spike when it releases easily and retain the lower nodes from which the next growth can emerge.
• Leaves droop but the medium is already damp: Do not water again until the fine roots are checked. A dry root zone needs even rehydration, whereas brown soft roots or a pinched stem must be removed before the healthy section is reset in airy medium.

Pet Safety

Specific information about Anoectochilus brevilabris ingestion in cats and dogs is not available. Prevent chewing and monitor a pet that has eaten the plant. A veterinarian should be contacted if more than a small amount was swallowed or if vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling or unusual tiredness follows.

A jewel orchid with a short lip

John Lindley published Anoectochilus brevilabris in 1840. The epithet combines Latin brevis, short, with labrum, lip, describing the orchid’s relatively short labellum.

The genus name is built from Greek words for an open lip. Both parts of the botanical name therefore refer to the flower’s labellum, the specialised petal commonly called the lip.
