Anacampseros papyracea forms tiny upright columns wrapped in silvery white papery scales. The actual succulent leaves are small and largely hidden between these broad stipules, which overlap like dry translucent shingles around each narrow stem.
New growth appears at the tip as tightly packed pale scales with hints of green beneath them. The stems lengthen slowly as additional stems arise from the base, eventually producing a close cluster of white textured columns only a few centimetres tall. Older scales become drier and more parchment-like while the centre continues growing. Small creamy-white to greenish-white flowers can open near the tips, adding soft petals above the crisp papery covering.
