Aroid Substrate Set – separate components for chunky aroid mixes

Aroid Substrate Set is made for custom mixing rather than one fixed recipe. That matters because a small Epipremnum cutting, a mature Monstera and a velvet Philodendron do not need the same exact texture.

Material and finish

Start with coco coir as the base, then work in perlite, pine bark and Lava Rock Granules until the mix feels springy and open. The finished substrate should hold some moisture while still falling apart easily between the fingers.

Details

Very small plants, fresh cuttings and fine-rooted tropical species may need less bark at first. Potting too chunky can reduce root contact, especially in tiny pots.

How to use it

This set is meant to make mixing easier. Use it as a full recipe or as a starting point you can adjust with extra mineral or organic components.

If you repot multiple plants, mix small batches first so you can tune the texture and drying rate to each pot and root system.

Worth noting

Pre-moisten dry components for a more even blend.
Keep leftovers sealed and dry between uses.
Match chunk size to pot size: smaller pots need finer structure.

Use the same scoop, cup or small nursery pot for every ingredient. Measure by volume and treat the ratio as a starting point, not a fixed recipe.

Start with: 4 parts coco coir, 3 parts pine bark, 2 parts perlite and 1 part Lava Rock Granules.
For thicker roots: Increase pine bark or Lava Rock Granules slightly for larger Monstera, Philodendron, Epipremnum and other tropical aroids with a stronger root system.
For smaller plants: Keep the texture closer and less chunky for plugs, young plants, compact nursery pots or finer root systems.

The aim is an open mix that still holds usable moisture between waterings — not a dry bark pile. If pots stay wet for too long, add more structure. If they dry too quickly, keep slightly more coco coir in the blend.
