Aloe vera carries thick fleshy leaves filled with clear gel. The grey-green blades rise from a central rosette, with faint mottling on young growth and small firm teeth running along both margins.
Juvenile leaves are short, upright and often more clearly spotted. Mature blades become broader, heavier and increasingly arching, commonly reaching 40–60 cm long. Basal offsets develop into additional rosettes and can turn one plant into a wide cluster. Established specimens may produce tall branched stalks of yellow tubular flowers. The lower leaves become the most substantial and water-filled, while fresh centre growth remains slimmer, paler and more vertical.
