Alocasia zebrina

Wild origin and habitat

Across several Philippine islands, Alocasia zebrina grows in rainforest at low to medium elevations. Its natural setting is warm, humid and forested, and its striped petioles are a natural feature of the wild species.

• Light: Give Alocasia zebrina bright indirect light, with gentle morning or evening sun after acclimation. Avoid hot midday sun.
• Watering: Water when the upper layer begins to dry, checking deeper in a large pot than a small one. Wet evenly and drain completely.
• Humidity and airflow: Moderate to high humidity is usually enough. Keep air moving around the crown, especially where large leaves overlap, and avoid cold draughts.
• Temperature: Keep in steady indoor warmth, with roots kept away from chilling temperatures. Avoid sudden chills and cold, wet substrate. Keep the corm and roots steadily warm; cold, wet substrate is especially risky.
• Feeding: Use a complete fertiliser at a low dose sparingly while growth is strong. Feed less often when growth or available light decreases.
• Leaf care: Clean one leaf at a time with a soft damp cloth, supporting it from below. Check undersides and petiole joints for pests.

Several large leaves lose firmness

One lower blade may age while the patterned or upright petioles continue supporting firm new growth. If several upright petioles soften together, compare pot weight with firmness at their bases, the corm and the lower roots. Use pot weight and moisture at root depth before watering a large Alocasia. A fixed patch appears on the exposed side

Relate the mark to the blade's exposed side and to any contact along the long petiole before changing care. A fixed dry patch on the exposed side points towards scorch, while a dark translucent mark at the point where a petiole or blade met cold glass supports chilling. Move the plant far enough to prevent the same contact or exposure on the next leaf, then mark the existing patch and monitor its edge.

Remove surface residue as a test, before making a cut

Wipe one small area of Alocasia zebrina gently and inspect it again in bright light. Mineral or handling residue lifts from the surface, while feeding scars, corking and internal discoloration remain within the large leaves, firm petioles and a substantial root ball. Mark the edge and wait to see where spreading damage stops before making a necessary cut. Keep firm leaves, roots and corm tissue, and clean the tool between any cuts into collapsed material.

Alocasia zebrina is toxic to people and pets

• This plant is toxic to humans, cats and dogs if ingested.
• Leaves and stems contain needle-like, insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

When was Alocasia zebrina first published, and what does it mean?

Alocasia combines the Greek prefix a-, meaning “without” or “lacking”, with Colocasia, the name of a related aroid genus. Zebrina means “zebra-like” for the banded stalks.
