Where Alocasia zebrina grows naturally

Alocasia zebrina is native to several Philippine islands, including Luzon, Mindanao, Leyte and Samar. It grows in warm, humid rainforest from low to middle elevations, where gaps in the canopy provide bright, filtered light.

Growing Alocasia zebrina

• Height: Expect long leaf stalks and a tall plant, and leave enough room for the leaves to spread without being knocked.
• Stability: Use a weighty pot as the plant becomes taller.
• Light: Give it a bright position out of prolonged hot sun. Increase any direct-sun exposure in stages.
• Watering: On larger plants, check below the surface where most of the roots are. Water once that deeper part of the pot starts to dry, before it dries through. Water until excess runs from the drainage holes. Let the pot drain, then empty any water left in the saucer or cover pot.
• Potting mix: Use a nutrient-rich mix with good drainage.
• Temperature: Keep it around 20–28 °C and away from cold windows or draughts. Move it away from cooler spots before temperatures fall below 15 °C.
• Humidity: Alocasia does best with medium to high humidity. Keep it in a bright spot away from heaters and air-conditioning. If the air is dry, place it near other houseplants that like similar conditions, leaving space between the leaves, or use a clean humidifier.

Troubleshooting Alocasia zebrina

• A leaf stem develops a sharp bend and the leaf hangs down. Check whether only one stem has a clean crease from handling or being knocked. If the rest of the plant is firm, stabilise the pot and protect the damaged stem from further knocks. If several leaf stems soften or droop together, check the roots and how wet the mix is instead.
• Several leaves yellow while the whole plant begins to droop. Check the mix before watering again. Rewater thoroughly if the root ball is genuinely dry; if it remains wet and the plant keeps weakening, inspect the roots and base. Cut away any soft or rotten parts with a clean, disinfected blade, disinfecting it again between cuts. Discard the removed rotten material and repot the healthy part in fresh, freely draining mix. • Fine pale speckles spread from the undersides of the leaves. Follow the veins and check where the leaf joins the stem for spider mites and fine webbing. If you find mites, move the plant away from nearby plants, clean the foliage where practical and use a treatment labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants, repeating it only at the interval stated on the label. • New leaves open with silver scars or tiny black specks. Inspect the newest folded growth and the bases of the long leaf stems for thrips. If thrips are present, isolate the plant and use a treatment labelled for thrips on indoor ornamental plants, following the label for repeat timing. If no pests are visible, keep conditions steady and check whether the next leaf opens normally.

Alocasia zebrina: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

Where the species name zebrina comes from

The epithet zebrina literally means “zebra-like”, a reference to the dark bands on the petioles.
