Dark green midrib and primary veins run through a pale grey-green to silvery leaf surface, creating the reversed colour arrangement that gives Alocasia reversa its name. The surface can show a subtle metallic quality when viewed in angled light.
This short-rhizomed Sarawak species stays compact in warm indoor growing conditions, with several contrasting leaves forming a close cluster above the base.
Mature cultivated plants are commonly around 30–35 cm tall. Several leaves arise together from a short, condensed rhizome, and papery brown cataphylls may remain around the base. Petioles are commonly around 10–20 cm long, while the thinly leathery blades are approximately 14–22 cm long and 6–10 cm wide. Their shape ranges from ovate to narrowly ovate-sagittate. Leaves can be peltate or partly peltate, with the petiole attaching slightly inside the blade on some leaves. Dark green primary veins and the midrib contrast with the grey-green to silvery leaf surface, which may appear subtly metallic in angled light. New blades can emerge softer and greener before developing their mature contrast.
Alocasia reversa is native to Sarawak in Borneo and has been recorded from the Padawan area. It occurs in forest over limestone, frequently growing on limestone boulders at low elevations up to approximately 300 m.
All parts of Alocasia reversa, including the leaves, petioles, rhizome tissue and inflorescences, contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals. If plant tissue is eaten, it can irritate the mouth and digestive tract. Keep the plant away from pets and young children, and wash your hands after pruning, division or contact with damaged plant tissue.
Alocasia reversa N.E.Br. belongs to the family Araceae and was first published in 1890. The name Alocasia is conventionally derived from the Greek a, meaning “without”, and Colocasia. The specific epithet reversa refers to the reversed-looking arrangement of dark veins within the paler leaf surface.
