Where the parent species of Alocasia ‘Polly’ grow naturally

The ancestry behind Alocasia ‘Polly’ runs through the ‘Amazonica’ hybrid, whose parentage is Alocasia sanderiana × Alocasia longiloba ‘Watsoniana’. Alocasia sanderiana grows in damp Mindanao ravines, while Alocasia longiloba occurs on humid Southeast Asian forest floors and in rocky ravines.

Both parent species grow in warm, humid forest beneath a canopy that filters the light.

Essential care for Alocasia ‘Polly’

• Light: Alocasia ‘Polly’ grows best in bright, filtered light. Direct sun can scorch its dark foliage.
• Temperature: Aim for roughly 22–26°C.
• Humidity: Keep humidity above 60% where practical, particularly while a new arrow-shaped leaf is unfurling.
• Watering: Keep the root ball lightly moist; water when the surface begins to feel less damp and let excess water escape.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser at low concentration during active growth.
• Substrate: Use coir or fine potting soil combined with bark and perlite or pumice.
• Repotting: A close-fitting, relatively deep pot suits its roots. Repot once the container becomes well filled.
• Propagation: Divide a well-rooted offset or mature corm from an established clump, keeping its roots intact during separation.
• Handling safety: Before repotting or unpotting, disturbing the root ball, cutting, pruning, division or propagation, wear gloves and keep Alocasia sap away from skin and eyes. After handling, wash hands and clean tools.

Problems and solutions for Alocasia ‘Polly’

• One lower leaf ages while the crown stays firm: Monitor this ordinary turnover while clean new growth continues; no action is needed if the change remains limited to that leaf.
• Yellowing repeats, the crown droops or the base loosens in wet mix: Check deeper moisture, pot weight, drainage, cold, recent repotting and feeding. Water and drain only when genuinely dry; if wet, stop watering and empty standing water. If decline continues, wear gloves and keep sap away from skin and eyes before unpotting. Retain firm roots and firm crown tissue and cut only confirmed dark, mushy, hollow, slimy or collapsing material with disinfected tools. If roots are firm, do not cut them; correct drainage, aeration, light or temperature. Repot surviving roots in fresh airy medium in a clean draining root-sized pot, then wash hands and clean tools. Rapidly spreading soft crown tissue or an unclear boundary needs professional diagnosis before further cutting.
• Stippling or webbing, or irregular silver scars and black specks cross the pale veins: Regular repeated veining is normal. Fine stippling, bronzing and webbing support mites; irregular scars, black droppings and distorted growth support thrips. Isolate the plant, inspect undersides and unfolding leaves, rinse accessible pests and, if signs persist, use a product labelled for the identified pest and indoor ornamentals. Test a small area, follow all label intervals and keep wet treated foliage out of direct sun.
• Exposed-side tissue bleaches after stronger sun: Move the plant away from hot direct sun while keeping bright indirect light, check for genuine root-ball dryness and water thoroughly only when needed. Do not remove a stable functional leaf solely for appearance; old damage will not green again, so judge the correction on unaffected later growth.

Alocasia ‘Polly’: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

How ‘Poly’ became ‘Polly’

William “Bill” Rotolante found the polyploid mutation at Silver Krome Gardens in the early 2000s among tissue-cultured Alocasia ‘Amazonica’ liners. He first called it ‘Poly’ for its polyploid origin; ‘Polly’ later became the established spelling.

The ‘Amazonica’ lineage is Alocasia sanderiana × Alocasia longiloba ‘Watsoniana’. Sanderiana honours Henry Sander, longiloba means “long-lobed”, and ‘Watsoniana’ commemorates Watson.
