Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ (‘Maxkowskii’)
Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ is a compact to medium Alocasia with dark velvety leaves and strong pale veins. The leaves are arrow-shaped, with rear lobes, a pointed front section and softly wavy margins. The upper surface is matte and deep green, while the underside is paler. Leaf stalks can show muted brownish, reddish or purplish mottling.
The species is native to Luzon in the Philippines, where it has been recorded in primary and secondary forest and along roadsides at higher elevations. Indoors, it does best with filtered light, stable warmth and a substrate that drains freely while holding light moisture.
Sander published Alocasia micholitziana in Gardeners’ Chronicle in 1912. The species name honours plant collector Wilhelm Micholitz. This plain green plant is usually sold as ‘Green Velvet’, while ‘Maxkowskii’ is an older trade name.
Mature indoor plants often reach around 45–70 cm, with size depending on light, pot volume and root strength. New leaves emerge from the base with a softer texture, then gradually firm into the dark matte surface. A winter or low-light pause is common in European homes; the plant may hold fewer leaves for a while as long as the rhizome remains firm.
Care
- Light for velvet leaves: Give bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun can be fine after acclimation, but strong direct sun can leave pale, dry marks on the velvety surface.
- Watering through growth and rest: During active growth, water when the upper 20–35% of the mix has dried. In winter or during a growth pause, let the upper half dry before watering again.
- Airy aroid mix: Use an open mix with bark, coco chips or coir, pumice or perlite and a small amount of finer moisture-holding material.
- Pot size: Move up by one pot size only when roots fill the current container. A smaller step keeps the mix drying at a sensible pace around the rhizome.
- Warmth: Keep between 18–28 °C where possible. Damp substrate below 16 °C can quickly stress the roots.
- Humidity for new leaves: Around 60% or higher helps new leaves expand without tearing or sticking.
- Gentle feeding: Feed lightly while new leaves are forming. Reduce feeding after repotting, root damage or during a winter pause.
- Fresh mix: Repot when roots fill the pot or when the substrate has broken down and drains slowly.
- Basal propagation: Propagate by small corms, offsets or rhizome division. Each piece needs firm tissue and an active growth point.
Issues
- Cold-wet yellowing: Check for cold, wet substrate first. A pot that stays heavy for many days usually needs less water or a freer mix.
- Dry brown tips: Often caused by dry air, uneven watering, fertiliser residue or hard water. Flush the substrate occasionally and keep watering more consistent.
- Droop after watering: Can point to root stress rather than thirst. Check drainage, pot size and root firmness.
- Reduced leaf size: Usually linked to weak light, depleted substrate, damaged roots or a recent growth pause.
- Stuck or distorted leaves: Check for low humidity, pests inside the emerging leaf or mechanical tearing while the leaf unfurls.
- Velvet leaf pest marks: Thrips and mites can show as dull stippling, bronzing or scarred new growth. Inspect undersides, leaf stalks and the newest leaf regularly.
Safety
All parts of Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ should be kept away from pets and small children. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth and stomach if ingested, and the sap may irritate sensitive skin.
