The names ‘Green Velvet’ and ‘Maxkowskii’

Alocasia combines the Greek prefix a-, meaning “without” or “lacking”, with Colocasia, the name of a related aroid genus.

The formal botanical citation is Alocasia (Schott) G.Don. George Don established the genus at that rank in 1839 in Hortus Britannicus, edition 3, page 631.

The epithet micholitziana honours German plant collector Wilhelm Micholitz, who collected the species in the Philippines.

Henry Frederick Conrad Sander described Alocasia micholitziana in 1912 in Gardeners’ Chronicle, series 3, volume 51, supplement, page li.

‘Green Velvet’ was documented in 1983 and recognized as the cultivar name in 1984. ‘Maxkowskii’ appeared later in horticultural literature in 2000–2001 for the same green plant; it is an outdated horticultural synonym, not a distinct cultivar.
