Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ (‘Maxkowskii’)

Where the species behind Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ (‘Maxkowskii’) grows naturally

Alocasia micholitziana is native to Luzon, where it grows in humid upland forest and brighter roadside openings. Filtered light and moving air reach the plants through the surrounding vegetation.

Care for Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ (‘Maxkowskii’)

Temperature range: Warm, stable conditions around 18–28 °C suit it; 15 °C is the lower limit for prolonged exposure.

Humidity: A level near 60–80% works well during everyday care. Maintain a soft flow of air around the leaves.

Growth rhythm: If growth slows in cooler or darker conditions, the pot will usually take longer to reach the same watering cue. Keep some moisture in the root ball during a healthy pause and reduce feeding until stronger growth returns.

Light: Shade to bright filtered light suits ‘Green Velvet’. Keep it away from prolonged hot direct sun.

Watering: While fresh leaves are developing, water after the upper part of the mix has partly dried while some moisture still remains deeper around the roots. Water evenly through the pot, then allow the excess to escape completely.

Potting mix: Use a rich potting mix that drains well and stays loose after watering.

Feeding: Give ‘Green Velvet’ light, regular nutrition during active growth, then lengthen the interval as new-leaf production eases.

Space: Leave enough room around the upright leaves and stalks, and move the plant if the foliage begins pressing against an obstruction.

Repotting: Move ‘Green Velvet’ into a slightly wider container once roots or new shoots have filled the current pot.

Starting a new plant: Separate a well-rooted offset with its roots intact and establish it in a loose, free-draining mix.

Problems to watch for with Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ (‘Maxkowskii’)

• Fine pale dots keep appearing across the leaves: Use a bright light to examine the undersides, especially along the veins, for moving spider mites or wisps of webbing. Once you confirm the pest, keep the plant apart from others. Use a treatment labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants, and repeat it only as directed on the label.
• Pale dry patches appear after the plant is moved into stronger light: Check whether direct rays now reach the foliage during part of the day. Shift the plant farther from the window while keeping the position bright. Existing scorch will remain, but later leaves should open without fresh patches.
• The leaves droop after the potting mix becomes much drier than usual: Water the root ball thoroughly, allow excess water to drain and then return to a more regular watering rhythm. Avoid letting the potting mix swing repeatedly from very dry to soaking wet.

Alocasia micholitziana ‘Green Velvet’ (‘Maxkowskii’): toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

Who micholitziana honours

Micholitziana honours German plant collector Wilhelm Micholitz, who collected the species in the Philippines.

Henry Frederick Conrad Sander described Alocasia micholitziana in 1912 in Gardeners’ Chronicle, series 3, volume 51, supplement, page li. ‘Green Velvet’ entered horticultural use in 1983 and was established as the cultivar name in 1984. ‘Maxkowskii’ appeared later in horticultural literature in 2000–2001 for the same green plant and now functions as an outdated horticultural synonym.
