Alocasia ‘Mayan Mask’, also known as ‘Williams Hybrid’, combines Alocasia odora with the ‘Amazonica’ line. A. odora grows in warm Asian rainforest, bamboo thickets, wetlands and along rivers. ‘Amazonica’ traces to A. sanderiana from damp Mindanao ravines and A. longiloba from humid Southeast Asian forest floors and rocky slopes.

Growing Alocasia ‘Mayan Mask’

• Space: ‘Mayan Mask’ grows quickly and upright, so leave generous room above and around the plant.
• Stability: As it becomes larger and heavier, use a pot that keeps the plant steady.
• Repotting: If the pot suddenly starts drying much faster even though the light and temperature have not changed, check whether the roots have filled it before moving up a size.
• Light: A bright position suits its vigorous growth. Introduce direct sun gradually rather than moving it abruptly into strong exposure.
• Watering: During fast growth, the pot can dry surprisingly quickly. Check it regularly and water before it dries through. Water until excess runs from the drainage holes. Let the pot drain, then empty any water left in the saucer or cover pot.
• Potting mix: Use a fertile mix that drains promptly yet does not dry too fast between the frequent waterings of active growth.
• Temperature: Keep it around 18–29 °C and away from cold windows or draughts. Move it away from cooler spots before temperatures fall below 15 °C.
• Feeding: Feed during sustained fast growth and ease off when the plant slows.
• Humidity: Alocasia does best with medium to high humidity. Keep it in a bright spot away from heaters and air-conditioning. If the air is dry, place it near other houseplants that like similar conditions, leaving space between the leaves, or use a clean humidifier.

When Alocasia ‘Mayan Mask’ shows signs of trouble

• Broad bleached or tan areas appear on the window-facing leaves: This often happens after a sudden increase in direct sun. Move the plant out of harsh midday exposure and let it get used to brighter light gradually. An otherwise useful leaf can stay on the plant even though the scorched area will remain visible.
• The edges of the large leaves become dry and crisp: ‘Mayan Mask’ can use water quickly while it is actively growing, so check whether the pot has been drying out much more than usual. Hot, dry air or a strong draught can make the problem worse. Return to a steadier watering rhythm and move the plant away from the drying air, but do not keep the potting mix permanently wet.
• Several leaves yellow and sag at the same time: Let the moisture in the pot guide you. If the root ball is thoroughly dry, water it well and let the excess drain away. Alocasia ‘Mayan Mask’: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.
