Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Aurea Variegata' has the large upright growth of giant taro with yellow, lime and green variegation. The leaves can open with soft washes, irregular streaks, marbling or broader golden sections; one leaf may be greener, while the next may carry more yellow.
It keeps the macrorrhizos growth habit, with thick petioles, a heavy base, strong roots and broad sagittate leaves. Pale yellow tissue gives the contrast, while greener parts of the leaf do more photosynthesis and help support the next large leaf.
Fresh leaves often open in softer tones before the surface firms and the colour becomes clearer. Some blades stay mostly green with yellow marks; others show larger yellow or lime sections. This leaf-to-leaf variation is normal for a golden-variegated macrorrhizos.
A greener leaf gives the plant more green leaf area for photosynthesis. Yellow tissue marks faster than green tissue, so hot sun, dry air, hard-water residue, fertiliser salts or contact with glass and shelves can leave brown areas on pale sections, especially before the leaf has fully hardened.
The species behind this form is native from Central Malesia to Queensland’s Murray Group. 'Aurea Variegata' is a cultivated golden-variegated form, so its care follows the large-rooted species while giving extra protection to the pale parts of the leaf.
Bright filtered light supports stronger growth and broader leaves.
Propagation is by division, offsets, basal shoots or firm rhizome sections once the plant is growing again. Variegation can differ between divisions, so young plants are best judged across several leaves. Mature plants can flower with a spathe and spadix; indoors, flowers are occasional, and the golden-variegated leaves are the main feature.
'Aurea Variegata' describes the golden-yellow variegation. The plant contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals, so keep it away from pets and young children and use gloves when trimming, repotting or dividing.
Keep it warm, bright and stable while new yellow-marked leaves harden.
