Alocasia macrorrhizos 'New Guinea Gold' is a large-growing Alocasia with broad tropical leaves, thick petioles and warm golden detail through the stems and foliage. It carries the heavy, upright growth of Alocasia macrorrhizos, with leaves held high from a sturdy base.
Golden petioles and splashed leaf markings give each plant its own pattern. New leaves can differ in the amount and placement of colour, especially while the plant is building a stronger stem and larger blades.
Alocasia macrorrhizos is a pachycaul aroid species from parts of Malesia to Queensland. Its thick stems, stout petioles and oversized leaves make this plant a spacious indoor specimen as it matures.
Alocasia macrorrhizos 'New Guinea Gold' contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat and skin. Keep it away from pets and children, and wear gloves if your skin reacts easily to aroid sap.
The genus name Alocasia comes from Greek a-, meaning not or without, and Colocasia, a closely allied aroid genus. The species epithet macrorrhizos comes from Greek roots meaning large root, referring to the thick rhizomatous base. In 'New Guinea Gold', warm gold colouring appears through the petioles and leaf markings.
