Where Alocasia longiloba grows naturally

Alocasia longiloba ranges from mainland Southeast Asia through the western and central Malay Archipelago. It grows on humid forest floors and in ravines, with some populations among boulders, cliffs or the wetter ground of swamp forest.

These habitats stay humid and receive regular rain. Water drains quickly around the roots in rockier places.

How to grow Alocasia longiloba

• Light: Provide bright filtered light, with gentle morning sun after gradual acclimation. Protect indoor foliage from abrupt exposure to hot sun through glass.
• Watering: Water when the upper layer begins to dry and the mix below remains lightly moist. Wet the root ball evenly, drain it fully and retain slight moisture around the rhizome.
• Humidity: Keep relative humidity around 60–80%, particularly as the long blades open.
• Airflow: Maintain gentle air circulation around the foliage and across the substrate surface.
• Temperature: Keep the plant at about 20–28°C and protect the root zone from cold.
• Feeding: Feed with a dilute complete fertiliser during active growth.
• Substrate: Use an open, moisture-retentive blend of coco fibre or peat, bark and pumice or perlite. The roots benefit from dependable moisture and generous air space.
• Growth slowdowns: If growth slows, check warmth, light and root-zone moisture. Match watering and feeding to current uptake, keeping the root zone warm and lightly moist until growth resumes.
• Repotting: Choose a snug, stable pot and preserve the established planting depth of the rhizome.
• Propagation: Divide a rooted offset, corm or healthy rhizome section during warm active growth. Each division needs its own growth point and enough roots to manage moisture independently.
• Handling safety: Before repotting or unpotting, disturbing the root ball, cutting, pruning, division or propagation, wear gloves and keep Alocasia sap away from skin and eyes. After handling, wash hands and clean tools.

Diagnosing problems in Alocasia longiloba

• The plant wilts or yellows while the medium remains wet: Stop watering, empty standing water and check drainage, light, temperature and feeding history. If decline persists, wear gloves and avoid sap contact with skin and eyes before unpotting; retain firm roots and remove only dark, mushy or collapsing portions directly confirmed as rotten. Repot into fresh airy medium in a clean draining pot sized to the surviving roots, then wash hands and clean tools.
• The base or rhizome becomes soft, dark, water-soaked or foul: Isolate the plant and do not make exploratory cuts. If inspection requires disturbing the root ball, first wear gloves and avoid sap contact with skin and eyes, then wash hands and clean tools afterwards. Obtain professional diagnosis before cutting if the boundary is unclear, the lesion enters the crown or rhizome, or the change is rapid; cut only directly confirmed decay with a clear firm boundary.
• Emerging leaves show silver scars and black dots, or mature leaves develop stippling and webbing: The first pattern supports thrips and the second supports mites. Isolate the plant, inspect folded growth, undersides and sheltered junctions, and rinse or wipe accessible pests. If live pests or fresh damage continue, use one locally registered product whose label lists the confirmed pest and indoor ornamentals. Test a small inconspicuous area first, then follow the label's instructions for protective equipment, ventilation, dilution, coverage, repeat intervals and maximum applications. Recheck folded growth, leaf undersides and sheltered junctions.
• New underside blisters turn corky: This is consistent with oedema. Confirm free drainage, empty standing water, reduce long wet periods in cool or dim conditions and improve gentle airflow. Old corking will remain, so use later leaves to judge improvement.

Alocasia longiloba: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

What longiloba means

Longiloba joins Latin longus, “long”, and lobus, “lobe”, describing the extended leaf lobes.
