Alocasia 'Loco' is a compact cultivated Alocasia with crinkled, folded leaves and a tight upright habit. Its blades develop puckered surfaces, curled margins and uneven edges, giving the plant a dense, textured look in a small pot.

New leaves rise on short petioles and harden into their twisted shape as they mature. The unusual texture is part of the plant's normal growth, so healthy foliage can look wrinkled, folded and irregular while still feeling firm.

• Temperature: Keep the root zone warm, especially after watering or repotting. Cold, wet substrate is the main winter risk.
• Feeding: Apply light fertiliser as the plant produces new leaves. Compact Alocasia cultivars prefer steady low-level nutrition.
• Potting: Keep it in a draining pot and size up gradually. The base should stay firm and stable above the substrate.
• Propagation: Separate corms, offsets or rhizome divisions once they have active roots.

Folds as stress indicators

• Soft base or collapsing petioles: Check for cold wet substrate, poor drainage and root rot.
• Leaf spotting in folds: Reduce water sitting on the leaf surface and improve airflow around the plant.
• Stippled or dusty-looking leaves: Inspect the folds and undersides for spider mites.
