Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’

Natural habitat of Alocasia cuprea

‘Red Secret’ is a cultivar of Alocasia cuprea, a Bornean species found on humid rainforest slopes around sandstone, limestone and other mineral-rich rock. Its small roots occupy shallow pockets of organic matter between the rocks.

Care for Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’

• Space: Leave moderate clearance around the leaves as the plant develops and choose pot size from root crowding.
• Humidity: Keep the air humid around ‘Red Secret’, especially while a new leaf is opening. If the room stays dry, use a clean humidifier nearby or place it near other houseplants that like similar conditions, leaving space between the leaves.
• Watering: Give the mix a little drying time after watering, then water again when the upper part begins to dry. If growth slows and the mix stays moist for longer, extend the interval. Water until excess runs from the drainage holes. Let the pot drain, then empty any water left in the saucer or cover pot.
• Light: Give ‘Red Secret’ bright filtered daylight or light shade and keep it out of prolonged direct sun.
• Potting mix: Use a peat-free houseplant mix with perlite or another chunky material that keeps air around the roots while still holding moisture and draining well.
• Temperature: Keep ‘Red Secret’ above 18 °C and away from cold glass and draughts.
• Feeding: While leaves are actively developing, feed every 2–3 weeks at the rate on the fertiliser label. Stop when growth slows.

Signs of trouble on Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’

• Fresh foliage develops rough silver scars with tiny black specks: Healthy leaves can open rose or copper and become bronze-green as they mature, but the surface should stay smooth. Scraped-looking scars and black specks point instead to thrips. • Fine pale speckles make the metallic surface look dull: Check beneath the leaves, especially beside the main veins. Visible spider mites or wispy webbing matter far more than normal shifts in the metallic colour. Keep an infested plant away from nearby plants and use a treatment labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants, repeating it according to the label.
• Yellowing spreads and the plant droops while the pot is still damp: Do not water again until you have checked the potting mix and the roots. If the roots are soft, dark or hollow, remove only the confirmed rot and repot in an airy mix using a pot that fits the healthy roots. The root-rot guide gives the recovery steps.
• Broad pale or tan patches appear after stronger sun reaches the leaves: Move the plant out of harsh midday light and let it adjust to brighter conditions gradually. Scorched patches will stay visible, but later leaves should remain cleaner if light was the cause.

Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

What cuprea means in Red Secret

Cuprea is Latin for “copper-coloured”, matching the metallic copper cast of the leaves.

Karl Heinrich Emil Koch and Carl David Bouché first described it as Caladium cupreum in 1855 in Index Seminum of the Berlin Botanic Garden, volume 1854, issue appendix, page 6. Karl Heinrich Emil Koch later placed it in Alocasia as Alocasia cuprea in 1861 in Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift, volume 4, page 141.
