Alocasia ‘Mint’ is a variegated form of Alocasia cucullata. It keeps the same upright, clumping growth, but the leaves are patterned in green, cream and soft mint tones.
Each leaf is different. Some are mostly green, while others carry more pale mint or cream.
The leaves are smooth and slightly curved, with a soft rounded shape. Patterns can appear as marbling, speckles or broader pale areas.
Greener parts of the leaf do more photosynthesis and help the plant make new leaves. Pale areas create the soft mint contrast, but they are more sensitive and can mark more easily from heat, dryness, rubbing or mineral residue.
Like the species, it comes from warm, humid regions across Asia. It grows best in stable conditions with warmth, filtered light, even moisture and an airy mix.
The variegation can change from leaf to leaf. After stress, lower light or transport, the plant may produce greener leaves for a while.
Give it bright indirect light. Leave space around new leaves while they open, because fresh pale tissue marks easily if it rubs against nearby growth.
Rotate the plant occasionally to keep growth even, and wait until new leaves harden before wiping or moving them heavily.
Use a pot close to the root size. Large pots can hold too much moisture in the centre.
Reduce watering when growth slows, and keep the plant warm. Avoid heavy feeding when the plant is not actively growing.
Propagation is usually by rooted shoots or division. Variegation can vary between new plants, so judge each division over several leaves.
Flowers may appear on mature plants. On this form, the mint-and-cream pattern gives each leaf a slightly different look.
This plant contains irritating crystals. Keep it away from pets and children, and use gloves if sap irritates your skin.
This variegated form shares the origin and name history of Alocasia cucullata. The species was given its current name by George Don in 1839, based on the earlier name Arum cucullatum published by João de Loureiro. It is native from Sri Lanka and the Himalayan region to southern China and Indo-China. The name cucullata means “hooded”, while ‘Mint’ refers to the soft green and cream colouring on the leaves.
