Native range and habitat of Aglaonema rotundum

Aglaonema rotundum is native to Sumatra and grows in wet tropical habitat. It has a decumbent stem that is upright only near the active tip, and it has been found beside a waterfall at about 360 m elevation near Medan, North Sumatra. The pale-to-pink veins on the upper surface and the deep red underside are natural species traits.

Indoor care for Aglaonema rotundum

• Stem position: Preserve the natural level of the creeping stem when potting or repotting, keeping the active tip above the substrate surface.
• Water and humidity: Water once the upper third or so of the mix has dried, then drain the pot fully. Use an airy moisture-buffering substrate; moderate indoor humidity is usually sufficient, while very dry heated air can contribute to crisp margins.
• Light: Give the plant bright filtered light and keep the glossy blades out of harsh direct sun.
• Temperature and propagation: Maintain steady warmth around 18–24 °C and protect the plant from prolonged temperatures below about 15 °C. Feed lightly during active growth and divide only sections that already have sound roots attached.

Common problems with Aglaonema rotundum

• Red undersides or cold damage: A firm, evenly deep-red leaf underside is normal. Soft, translucent or spreading dark patches after cold exposure indicate injury. Move the plant into stable warmth and remove tissue only if it begins to decay.
• Yellowing in wet mix: A heavy, persistently wet pot together with yellow leaves points to excess moisture at the roots. Wait longer before watering again and improve drainage. Ongoing decline warrants a root inspection; keep firm roots, remove only soft dark decay and repot in a fresh open mix if rot is present.
• Crisp curled margins: Curling with crisp margins can develop after prolonged dryness or hot dry airflow. Rehydrate a dry root ball thoroughly and keep future moisture and surrounding humidity more even.
• Spider mites: Fine stippling or webbing is a strong reason to check for mites. If you confirm them, quarantine the plant and wash both sides of each leaf. Apply an indoor treatment labelled for spider mites to both leaf surfaces and folded new growth, then repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course.

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

About the name Aglaonema rotundum

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament. The epithet rotundum is Latin for round, referring to the rounded leaf outline.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Aglaonema in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 1829, page 892.
