Aglaonema ‘Red Joy’

Cultivated origin of Aglaonema ‘Red Joy’

‘Red Joy’ is a horticultural Aglaonema cultivar. The genus’s native range extends from north-eastern India to Papua New Guinea. Many wild species grow on moist, shaded forest floors.

Everyday care for Aglaonema ‘Red Joy’

• Give the foliage filtered light: Bright indirect light is suitable; gentler indirect light also works. Avoid direct midday sun through glass, which can leave permanent dry or bleached areas.
• Keep the centre clean and warm: Use an airy mix that holds some moisture while still draining freely, and clear dead material from between the short shoots from the base. Maintain steady warmth and keep the plant away from cold draughts.
• Temperature: For ‘Red Joy’, maintain about 18–24 °C and prevent extended chilling below 15 °C.
• Humidity: 50–60% humidity is usually suitable. Keep the plant away from strong dry airflow.
• Judge water by the whole pot: Check moisture below the surface before watering. Once the upper portion is dry, water thoroughly and let the pot drain. Avoid frequent small amounts.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or the clump clearly needs more root space. Base shoots can remain in the current pot while the roots still have comfortable room.
• Feed and propagate during active growth: Use a complete fertiliser at a modest dose while fresh leaves are developing. Well-rooted side shoots can be divided when repotting; healthy stem pieces containing a node can also be rooted warm.

Aglaonema ‘Red Joy’: common problems and what to do

• Leaves droop suddenly: Check the root ball before reaching for the watering can. A very dry root ball should be soaked thoroughly. If the mix is wet, stop watering and let it dry further; if the stem base is also soft, inspect the roots and remove only decayed tissue before replanting the firm roots. Temperature shock can cause a similar temporary collapse, so also rule out recent cold exposure.
• Blackened or translucent tissue after cold exposure: Chilling damage can develop after transport, a cold night or contact with winter glass. Move the plant into stable warmth and wait until the boundary of the damage is clear before removing dead tissue.
• Yellowing spreads from the lower leaves while the mix remains wet: Reduce watering frequency, improve airflow through the mix and make sure the drainage holes are clear. If the stem base softens or the plant continues to yellow, inspect the roots, cut away only clearly decayed tissue and replant the firm remainder in a fresh, free-draining mix.
• White cottony clusters in the newest growth — mealybugs: Isolate the plant and open the newest growth gently to confirm cottony insects along the red petioles and their sheltered bases. Remove visible insects, then apply an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil labelled for mealybugs and suitable for houseplants to the newest growth, both leaf surfaces, the petioles and their sheltered bases. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course while you recheck new growth. The mealybug guide is useful if you find white cottony clusters.
• Hard or soft bumps with sticky honeydew — scale: Keep the plant isolated and inspect both leaf surfaces, the red petioles and their sheltered bases to confirm fixed scale bumps. Remove visible insects, then apply an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil labelled for scale and suitable for houseplants to both leaf surfaces, the petioles and their sheltered bases. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course and continue checking the newest growth.
• Silvery scarring and tiny black specks — thrips: Isolate the plant, then inspect the newest growth, both leaf surfaces and along the petioles for slender moving insects or black specks beside fresh silver scarring. Once thrips are confirmed, apply an indoor-plant treatment labelled for thrips to the newest growth, both leaf surfaces and along the petioles. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course while you recheck new growth.

Aglaonema ‘Red Joy’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Aglaonema first published, and what does it mean?

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Aglaonema in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 1829, page 892.
