Agave salmiana var. ferox grows into a large, heavily armed Mexican agave with broad grey-green leaves, hooked marginal teeth and a heavy rosette. Even as a young plant, the thick leaf bases and outward-curving blades show the scale this variety can reach with space, strong light and a free-draining root zone.
This rosette stores water in heavy leaves and needs high light, a stable pot and fast drainage. In containers it can be managed for years, but it should be treated as a large-growing agave from the start, with enough space for the armed leaf tips.
Agave salmiana var. ferox is a large Mexican variety of Agave salmiana. It is native from northwestern Oaxaca to eastern Veracruz in Mexico, where it grows as a succulent perennial in subtropical conditions. The variety’s thick leaves and armed margins reflect a plant adapted to high light, stored water and fast drainage around the roots.
The rosette grows from broad, fleshy leaves that rise from a heavy centre and arch outward as they lengthen. The surface is grey-green to dark green, often with a slightly waxy look. The marginal teeth are hard, hooked spines that need clear space around the plant. The terminal spine at the tip of each leaf is also sharp, especially on older leaves.
In the ground under suitable dry conditions, this agave can become very large. In pots, growth is slower and size depends strongly on light, root volume and winter care. Mature plants may eventually produce a tall branched inflorescence with greenish-yellow flowers. After flowering, that rosette declines, while offsets may continue if the plant has produced them.
Even when sold young, this agave needs space. Its final placement should account for the leaf spread and spine reach, especially around doors, paths, seating areas and pet access.
Agave salmiana var. ferox has strong marginal teeth and sharp terminal spines. Handle with thick gloves, keep the rosette away from children and pets, and place it where people and animals have clear space around the leaves. Damaged agave tissue can release irritating sap, so wash skin and tools after cuts or repotting.
Agave salmiana var. ferox (K.Koch) Gentry is a variety in the family Asparagaceae. The genus name Agave is linked to Greek agauos, meaning “admirable” or “noble”. The epithet ferox is Latin for fierce or spiny, referring to the strongly armed leaf margins.
