Agave parryi var. truncata is a blue-grey agave with a rounded, compact rosette and broad leaves that end in a blunt, cut-off tip. The thick succulent leaves sit tightly around the centre, giving the plant a solid, ordered shape from an early size.
Dark terminal spines, toothed margins and firm water-storing leaves show its dry-growing structure. In a pot, Agave parryi var. truncata develops slowly and keeps its best shape with bright light, mineral drainage and long dry intervals between waterings.
Agave parryi var. truncata forms a low rosette rather than an upright stem. Each new leaf emerges from the centre and presses against the surrounding leaves before hardening, which can leave subtle imprints across the surface. The plant gains width and weight through its thick leaves, so a stable pot becomes useful as the rosette matures.
This botanical variety is native to Durango and Zacatecas in Mexico, where it grows in desert or dry shrubland conditions. Roots dry more safely in a gritty mineral substrate than in dense potting soil.
Agave parryi var. truncata has sharp leaf tips, toothed margins and sap that can irritate skin. Place it where people and pets will not brush against the rosette, and wear gloves when repotting or removing dry leaves.
The genus name Agave comes from Greek and is often interpreted as noble or admirable. The species name parryi honours the botanist Charles Christopher Parry, while truncata refers to the blunt, truncate leaf tip that separates this variety visually from many other Agave parryi forms.
