Cold tolerance and a tight blue-grey rosette make Agave neomexicana, the New Mexico agave, stand out among compact hardy agaves. This plant is also known botanically as Agave parryi subsp. neomexicana.
The leaves are lance-shaped, firm and edged with dark teeth, with a strong terminal spine at the tip. Established plants can produce basal offsets, slowly forming a cluster of rosettes. Its blue-toned leaves, high-desert origin and compact crown suit sunny pots, dry beds and protected outdoor cultivation.
Agave parryi subsp. neomexicana is native from southern New Mexico to western Texas and Coahuila in northern Mexico. It grows in gravelly to rocky places in grasslands and desert scrub at around 1600–2100 m elevation.
Rosettes are commonly around 35–45 cm tall and 40–60 cm wide, with stiff leaves that can reach roughly 17–45 cm long. Its natural habitat is bright, open and mineral, with strong drainage and dry seasonal conditions. In cultivation, the crown should dry quickly and winter moisture should stay low.
Agave neomexicana has sharp leaf tips and toothed margins. Keep it away from pets, children and narrow paths. The sap can irritate skin and soft tissue, and ingestion may cause mouth or stomach irritation. Wear gloves when repotting or removing offsets.
Agave neomexicana Wooton & Standl. is also known as Agave parryi subsp. neomexicana (Wooton & Standl.) B.Ullrich in the family Asparagaceae. The epithet neomexicana refers to New Mexico, part of its native range. The genus name Agave is linked to Greek agauos, meaning “admirable” or “noble”.
