Agave montana is a broad-leaved Mexican agave from high-elevation habitat in Nuevo León. It grows as a heavy solitary rosette with short upright green leaves, reddish-brown marginal teeth and a stout terminal spine.
As the rosette matures, bud imprints can appear where teeth press against neighbouring leaves before they unfold. These pressed markings add texture to the broad leaves and become more visible on older growth.
Agave montana stays mainly solitary and slowly builds a weighty rosette. The broad leaves store water, while the compact centre needs airflow and careful watering to stay firm.
A gritty substrate, a drainage pot and bright exposure help the roots dry properly between waterings. The plant also needs side clearance because the teeth and terminal spine can catch during movement.
The genus Agave comes from Greek agauos, often understood as noble or admirable. The species epithet montana refers to mountain habitat, matching this species’ high-elevation origin in northeastern Mexico.
Agave montana has sharp teeth, a stout terminal spine and irritant sap. Handle with gloves and keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.
Agave montana develops a broad solitary rosette with firm green leaves, reddish teeth and textured bud imprints.
