Yellow to cream leaf edges trace the broad, arching leaves of Agave demeesteriana f. marginata. This margin-variegated smooth agave forms an upright rosette with green to blue-green leaf centres and a sharp terminal spine.
You may also find this plant sold as Agave desmetiana, Agave desmettiana or Agave demeesteriana 'Marginata'. The pale-edged form is grown for its curved leaves, clean rosette shape and yellow-to-cream margins.
Agave demeesteriana is a species in the Asparagaceae family and is native to Mexico. It grows as a succulent perennial in seasonally dry tropical conditions. In cultivation, it needs warmth, bright light and a root zone that dries between watering.
The margin-variegated horticultural form keeps the species’ curved leaf shape while adding pale edges along the blades. Its rosette rises from the centre and then opens outward, giving mature plants a rounded crown. Older plants may flower on a tall panicle with pale yellow flowers; after flowering, that rosette declines, while offsets can remain.
Agave demeesteriana f. marginata has a sharp terminal spine and irritating sap. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and wear gloves when repotting, separating offsets or removing damaged leaves.
Agave demeesteriana Jacobi is a Mexican agave in the family Asparagaceae. The genus name Agave comes from Greek agauos, meaning “admirable” or “noble”. The form name marginata refers to the pale leaf margins.
