Adelonema picturatum

A Forest-Floor Aroid from Tropical America

Adelonema picturatum is native to wet tropical regions of Central and South America. Its range extends from Costa Rica and Panama into northern and western South America.

It grows terrestrially in lowland and premontane forest, including damp alluvial ground. The rhizome spreads through loose surface material beneath filtered light, where moisture is regular and continues moving through the root zone.

Care for a Creeping Adelonema

• Light: Bright indirect or softly filtered light supports full leaves and balanced growth. Direct sun can bleach or scorch the blades.
• Water: Keep the mix lightly moist and water after the surface begins to dry. Empty excess water so the rhizome never sits in stagnant conditions.
• Humidity and airflow: Higher humidity limits dry edges, especially on new foliage. Provide gentle air movement instead of enclosing the plant in still damp air.
• Temperature: Maintain stable warmth, ideally 20 to 28 °C. Prolonged cool conditions slow the rhizome and increase the risk from wet substrate.
• Substrate: Use a fine, open aroid mix with bark, coco fibre and mineral drainage material. A wider pot accommodates the creeping rhizome.
• Feeding: Apply diluted balanced fertiliser during active leaf production. Flush the mix occasionally if salts accumulate.
• Pruning and repotting: Remove spent leaves at the base, keep the rhizome at the same level and avoid burying active growth points.
• Propagation: Cut or separate an established rhizome only where each division retains roots and at least one healthy growing point.

Diagnosing Changes in Marbled Foliage

• Multiple yellow leaves: Examine the roots and rhizome for damage, especially when the mix remains wet or the room is cool.
• Brown edges: Dry air, uneven moisture and fertiliser residue can produce similar marks. Review all three before increasing watering.
• Soft petioles or collapsing growth: Rhizome or root rot is likely. Cut back to firm tissue and repot a rooted healthy section.
• Pale washed-out blades: Light may be too intense. Move the plant away from direct sun.
• Little new growth: Cool temperatures, weak light, recent division or poor roots can slow the rhizome. Extra fertiliser will not correct damaged roots.
• Pests: Thrips, spider mites and mealybugs can gather on new leaves and around petiole bases. Isolate the plant, rinse or wipe away visible insects, then treat the leaf undersides, new growth and petiole bases with a product labelled for ornamental plants. Repeat as directed on the label until no new activity appears.

Pet safety

• Not pet-safe. The plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.
• Chewing can cause immediate mouth pain, drooling, swelling or vomiting.
• Contact a veterinarian promptly if a pet chews the plant or develops symptoms.

Name, type and classification history

Botanical name: Adelonema picturatum (Linden & André) S.Y.Wong & Croat

Adelonema combines the Greek adelos, hidden or obscure, with nema, thread. The epithet picturatum means painted or patterned and refers to the pale marbling across the leaves.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard André published the basionym Curmeria picturata in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 20, page 45 and plate 121, in 1873. The type is the published plate of a plant collected in Colombia by Benedikt Roezl in 1872 and cultivated by Linden in Paris. Wong Sin Yeng and Thomas B. Croat published the current combination in Systematic Botany, volume 41, page 43, in 2016.

The species ranges from south-western Costa Rica through Panama and Colombia to Peru, with a separate occurrence in the Guianas.
