Adelonema peltatum

Wet Forests of Colombia and Ecuador

Adelonema peltatum is native to wet tropical regions of Colombia and Ecuador. It grows as a terrestrial plant beneath warm forest canopy, with its short rhizome in loose organic material and its broad leaves held above the surrounding ground vegetation.

Root care for clumping aroids

• Pruning and repotting: Remove a yellow old leaf at the base once it releases easily. Repot without burying the rhizome more deeply.
• Light: Bright filtered light produces steady growth and full-sized leaves. Direct midday sun can scorch the broad blades; very low light leads to smaller new growth.
• Water: Water when the upper layer begins to dry. Keep the root ball lightly moist during active growth, then let excess water drain completely.
• Humidity and airflow: Moderate to high humidity reduces dry margins and supports clean leaf opening. Gentle airflow is still needed around the crown and petiole bases.
• Temperature: Cold combined with wet substrate can damage the rhizome and roots.
• Substrate: Use an open aroid mix that retains some moisture without compacting. Keep the short rhizome at the surface or only lightly covered.
• Feeding: Regular diluted fertiliser during active growth supplies nutrients for the large leaves. Reduce the amount when light and growth slow.
• Propagation: Divide an established rhizome only where each section has a healthy growth point and its own roots.

Leaf, Rhizome and Root Problems

• Several yellow leaves: Wet roots, cold conditions or damaged rhizome tissue are likely. Check drainage and inspect the roots if yellowing continues.
• Brown margins: Irregular watering, dry air or accumulated fertiliser salts can mark the blade edges. Correct the underlying cause; trimming healthy green tissue will not stop new damage.
• Soft petiole bases or sour-smelling mix: Rot is developing in the roots or rhizome Remove decayed tissue and repot the firm plant in a fresh open mix.
• Successively smaller leaves: Increase filtered light and inspect root health. Cool conditions or exhausted substrate can also restrict new growth.
• Pale dry patches: Direct sun has scorched the leaf. Move the plant out of direct sun and retain bright filtered light.
• Pests: Thrips, spider mites, scale and mealybugs can collect beneath leaves and around petiole bases. Isolate and treat affected plants early.

Adelonema peltatum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

About the name Adelonema peltatum

Adelonema combines the Greek adelos, hidden or obscure, with nema, thread. The epithet peltatum means shield-shaped and describes a leaf whose stalk joins the blade beneath its surface near the centre.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Adelonema in 1860 in Prodromus Systematis Aroidearum, page 316.

Maxwell Tylden Masters first described it as Homalomena peltata in 1877 in Gardeners’ Chronicle, new series, volume 7, page 273. Sin Yeng Wong and Thomas Bernard Croat later placed it in Adelonema as Adelonema peltatum in 2016 in Systematic Botany, volume 41, page 43.
