Philodendron spiritus-sancti

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron spiritus-sancti

Philodendron spiritus-sancti is endemic to Espírito Santo in south-eastern Brazil. It was historically known from a very small area near Domingos Martins, where it grows as a hemiepiphytic vine in wet tropical forest.

In 2024, botanists reported another population in Monumento Natural da Serra das Torres, about 128 km south of the previously known records. They counted at least 50 well-developed plants as well as many seedlings, including plants rooted on humid rock walls. The finding broadened the known distribution while keeping the species restricted to Espírito Santo.

Care for Philodendron spiritus-sancti

Support and leaf clearance: Give the climbing stem a tall, stable surface and keep active nodes close enough to attach. Leave open space around the support so the long leaves can extend without being bent or trapped.

Light and temperature: Aim for warm conditions around 18–29 °C. Bright indirect light supports stronger growth. Increase brightness gradually, keep the plant above 15 °C and protect the leaves from strong sun, cold draughts and hot radiators.

Water and potting mix: Use an airy, well-drained mix that still retains some moisture. Let the surface dry slightly, then water thoroughly and let all surplus water escape.

Humidity: Use 50–60% as the normal humidity range. Keep a gentle flow of air around the foliage during ordinary care. Steady humidity is useful while the exceptionally long leaves unfurl. In a dry heated room, a humidifier can help prevent repeated margin crisping or sticking, provided the plant also has good air circulation.

Feeding: Use a complete houseplant fertiliser during active growth and reduce feeding when the plant slows.

Repotting: Repot when roots become crowded or the mix becomes dense or drains more slowly. Use a container only a little larger than the root ball and preserve attached climbing roots where practical.

Propagation: Choose healthy stem growth with a node; a node that already has an aerial root can settle more quickly.

Common problems with Philodendron spiritus-sancti

• Growth stalls while the pot remains wet: Pause watering and check drainage. If decline continues as the mix dries, inspect the roots. Keep firm roots intact, cut only clearly rotten soft sections back to sound tissue with disinfected scissors and discard them before repotting in fresh, airy mix. See our root rot guide.
• New leaves become markedly smaller over several growth cycles: Check usable light, root health and climbing contact. Correct the limiting condition, then compare the next few leaves.
• Leaf tips and margins turn brown: Review repeated dry-outs, fertiliser salts, very dry heated air and root condition. Flush excess salts if needed; our brown leaf tips guide covers further checks.
• New leaves show silvered scars or black specks: Isolate the plant and inspect emerging growth for thrips. If present, use a houseplant treatment labelled for thrips and repeat it according to the label.
• Fine stippling or webbing appears beneath older leaves: Inspect the undersides of older leaves for moving spider mites or fresh webbing. If mites are confirmed, separate the plant and rinse accessible surfaces gently, protecting the narrow blades from damage. For persistent activity, use only a locally authorised product labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants. Follow its coverage, safety and repeat instructions and keep checking new growth.

Philodendron spiritus-sancti is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does the name Philodendron spiritus-sancti mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet spiritus-sancti refers to Espírito Santo in Brazil; the place name literally means Holy Spirit.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

George Sydney Bunting first described Philodendron spiritus-sancti in 1987 in Phytologia, volume 61, page 441.
