Tillandsia tricolor

A tricoloured flower spike from Mesoamerican forests

Tillandsia tricolor is native from southern Mexico through Central America. Diederich von Schlechtendal and Adelbert von Chamisso published the species in 1831. Its name refers to the green, red and violet colours displayed around the flower spike.

Wild plants grow on trees in wet tropical vegetation. Roots secure the upright rosette to bark, while rain, mist and dissolved organic material reach the scales covering the leaves. The forest provides humid air and changing light, and the exposed branches allow air to circulate after rain. Its colourful flower spike rises within this Mesoamerican canopy habitat.

Growing Tillandsia as air plants

Temperature

Maintain steady indoor warmth and protect from chilling temperatures. The green wet rosette is sensitive to chilling, so dry it in warmth before returning it near a window.

Light

Place Tillandsia tricolor close to an east-facing window or slightly back from stronger south or west exposure. Fierce midday rays can burn the thinner leaf surface, and weak light makes the rosette lank, soft and slow to flower.

Watering

Fully rinse or briefly immerse the plant in low-mineral water after it has dried and the leaves begin to lose flexibility. Its greener leaves hold less drought reserve than very silver Tillandsia, so do not leave it dry until tips become brittle. Roots are used for anchorage and should not be buried. An upright or slightly tilted mount is suitable if it can be inverted after watering.

Fertilising

Add air-plant or bromeliad fertiliser at a very low dose to an occasional full wetting during active growth. The greener leaf surface benefits from light, regular nutrition only while warmth and bright daylight are supporting active growth.

Mounting

There is no conventional repotting. Replace the mount when the growing base is constricted, pups lose airflow or the rosette cannot be inverted for drying.

Colourful bracts without crown rot

• The central spike shows contrasting colours: Brightly coloured bracts are part of flowering, not leaf damage. The display can persist after individual flowers fade, so remove it only once the stalk is fully spent.
• The upright green rosette looks paler after a dark winter: Increase bright filtered light gradually. Weak light can soften new growth, but an abrupt move into intense sun may leave bleached tan scorch.
• Brown leaf tips appear first: Review watering frequency and heat. Rehydrate the plant fully, shake it dry and keep it away from a heater; trimming is optional and does not correct the cause.

How did Tillandsia tricolor get its name?

Tillandsia honours the Finnish physician and botanist Elias Tillandz. The epithet tricolor is Latin for three-coloured.

Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal and Ludolf Karl Adelbert von Chamisso first described Tillandsia tricolor in 1831 in Linnaea, volume 6, page 54.
