Air Plants of the Americas

Tillandsia is a large genus native to the Americas. Different species occur from humid forests to exposed dry woodland, rock faces and desert regions, so each plant in a mixed set can dry and dehydrate at a different rate.

Most cultivated air plants are epiphytes or lithophytes. They attach to trees or rocks without feeding from them and experience alternating periods of rain, mist or dew followed by moving air and complete drying.

Caring for a Mixed Tillandsia Set

• Light: Keep the set in bright indirect light. Silver, heavily scaled plants often tolerate some direct sun. Soft green types require gentler light. Acclimate every plant gradually.
• Water: Soaking for about 20 minutes is a useful starting method, not a fixed schedule. Rewater after the plants have dried completely and begin to feel less firm; warm dry rooms usually shorten this interval.
• Drying: Shake water from the rosettes and dry them upside down or on an open towel. No water should remain trapped in the centre before placing the plants back.
• Humidity and airflow: Humidity reduces water loss. Constant dampness harms the rosettes. Keep air moving around every rosette and avoid closed containers.
• Temperature: Stable room temperatures are suitable. Protect the plants from frost, cold draughts and hot glass in direct midday sun.
• Support: No substrate is needed. Keep each plant on an open, dry support that does not hold water against the base.
• Feeding: During active growth, use a very weak Tillandsia or bromeliad fertiliser occasionally in the soaking water. Strong or frequent feeding can burn the leaf scales.
• Grooming and propagation: Remove only fully dry outer leaves. After flowering, leave offsets attached until they have formed a firm rosette at least one-third of the parent’s size before separating them carefully.

Air Plant Problems and Natural Changes

• Brown tips: The plant may be drying too far, receiving hot sun or reacting to mineral-heavy water. Adjust watering for that individual plant and use rainwater or low-mineral water where possible.
• Leaves curling more tightly: Compare the plant with its normal shape. Increased curling and loss of firmness usually indicate dehydration.
• Soft dark base: Rot has begun after water remained trapped around the centre or lower leaves. Remove the plant and allow it to dry; badly softened tissue cannot recover.
• Bleached patches: Direct sun is too strong for the plant’s current acclimation. Move it back from the glass and increase sun exposure more gradually.
• Centre leaves pull free: The growing point has rotted. Review drying time and airflow for every plant in the set.
• Slow growth: Tillandsias naturally grow slowly. A firm centre producing new leaves indicates active growth even when the change is small.

Pet safety

• Tillandsia air plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
• Swallowed plant pieces may still cause mild stomach upset.

The Tillandsia name

Genus: Tillandsia L.

Tillandsia honours Elias Tillandz, the Swedish-Finnish physician and botanist. Carl Linnaeus published the genus in Species Plantarum on page 286 in 1753.

Air plant is an established common name for Tillandsias that grow without soil and take up water across specialised scales on their leaves. These sets bring together a changing mixture of Tillandsia species that share this soil-free growth habit.
