Origin, History and Cultivation

Spathiphyllum ‘Torelli’ was developed within Floricultura’s peace-lily range as a modern cultivated form of Spathiphyllum.

Its botanical ancestry lies within this tropical American aroid genus, whose wild species grow on humid forest floors, stream banks and other sheltered ground.

Care for clumping aroid roots and foliage

Growth and support: Give Spathiphyllum ‘Torelli’ a bright position out of direct midday sun to support its full crown and firm inflorescences.

Roots and substrate: Closely packed leaves can hide the substrate, so inspect it directly rather than assuming the plant is dry. Water after the surface begins drying, saturate the complete root ball and drain it fully.

Feeding: Remove ageing flower stalks and fully yellow leaves at the base to keep the crown open. Feed modestly while the plant is actively producing leaves and flowers.

What to Watch for with Spathiphyllum ‘Torelli’

The tightly packed crown of ‘Torelli’ can hide both dry mix and old damp leaf bases. Feel below the surface before watering. Firm pale roots in dry mix need a complete soak and full drainage. When wet mix surrounds roots that have turned dark and soft, remove them, improve drainage and restore warmth. Clear dead leaf and flower bases so they cannot hold moisture against the crown.

Brown tips may come from hard water, salts, damaged roots or repeated drying. Correct the cause rather than simply cutting the tips. Pinprick fading or webbing points to mites. Thrips instead produce rough silvered marks and tiny black droppings in new leaves and flowers. Check the folded growth and leaf undersides closely.

A wet patch that grows from the crown into healthy tissue is different from an old dry mark. Place Spathiphyllum ‘Torelli’ apart from nearby plants and keep its leaves dry. Disinfect tools after handling the crown. Natural old outer leaves can be removed once they have fully yellowed.
