Origin of Spathiphyllum 'Torelli'

‘Torelli’ comes from the Van der Voort Young Plants Spathiphyllum range, part of Dutch breeding for compact flowering peace lilies.

It was selected as a compact cultivar with a full shape, dark leaves and firm white flowers.

How to keep Spathiphyllum 'Torelli' healthy

• Light: Medium to bright indirect light supports full growth and regular flowering. Protect the dark leaves from scorching direct sun.
• Water: The full clump can hide the potting surface, so feel the mix directly. Water once the surface starts to dry, then drain the pot completely.
• Humidity: Moderate humidity is normally sufficient; higher humidity is helpful if the tips become dry in heated or air-conditioned rooms.
• Temperature: Keep it in warm, steady indoor conditions and away from cold window glass, draughts and direct heat.
• Potting mix: Use a free-draining houseplant mix that still holds some moisture. Avoid compacted compost around the base of the plant.
• Feeding: Feed about monthly while the plant is growing and flowering, using a balanced houseplant fertiliser according to its label.
• Repotting: Repot one size up once roots are crowded, keeping the new pot only slightly larger than the root ball.
• Flowering: Cut finished flower stalks close to the base and keep the plant in good indirect light to encourage more flowers later.
• Grooming: Remove dead leaf bases and fully yellow leaves so the dense centre stays clean and it is easier to check the mix and look for pests.

Troubleshooting Spathiphyllum 'Torelli'

• The whole plant droops: Check the potting mix beneath the dense leaves before watering. Dry mix needs a thorough soak; if the mix is wet and the foliage is drooping, check the roots and drainage.
• Leaves yellow inside the dense clump: Water can stay trapped where old leaves and wet mix meet. Remove dead material, improve drainage and compare persistent yellowing with the yellow-leaf guide.
• Brown tips keep returning: Avoid letting the plant dry out repeatedly, raise humidity if needed and deal with salt build-up before trimming the damage. If you see hard-water deposits on the mix, flushing the pot may help.
• The base or roots become soft: Remove rotten tissue with clean, disinfected tools, discard it and repot in fresh airy mix. Keep dead material away from the base of the plant and use the root-rot guide if many roots are affected.
• New leaves or flowers become scarred or distorted: Inspect for thrips, mites and mealybugs inside the dense centre. Isolate confirmed pests and repeat a treatment labelled for the identified pest at the interval stated on the label.
