Cultivated origin of Spathiphyllum Bingo Cupido ('Spapril')

Bingo Cupido is the trade name for cultivar ‘Spapril’, developed within KP Holland’s Dutch Cupido Spathiphyllum line.

Bingo Cupido was selected for a medium-to-large dark-green clump, large white spathes and a generous flower display.

How to care for Spathiphyllum Bingo Cupido

• Light: Give it bright to medium indirect light. It tolerates a shadier position, but new growth and flowering are usually stronger with good filtered light. Keep it out of hot direct sun.
• Water: Keep the root ball lightly and evenly moist, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering again. If the leaves start to lose firmness and the mix is dry, water thoroughly and let excess water drain.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps keep the broad leaf tips in good condition. Very dry heated air can make the edges brown more easily.
• Temperature: Keep it in warm, steady indoor conditions. Protect it from cold draughts, cold window glass and abrupt temperature swings.
• Potting mix: Use a houseplant mix that holds some moisture but stays airy and drains well. A mix that stays saturated for long periods raises the risk of damaged roots.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced houseplant fertiliser about monthly while the plant is making new leaves or flowers, following the product label. Reduce or stop feeding when growth is clearly slow.
• Repotting: Move up only one pot size when roots densely fill the container or the mix has broken down. An unnecessarily large pot stays wet for longer and makes watering harder to judge.
• Flowering: Good light and healthy new growth encourage repeat flowering at home. Flowering intensity naturally varies over time.
• Grooming: Cut fully yellow leaves and finished flower stalks close to the base with clean scissors. Wipe dust from the leaves to keep the dark foliage clean.

Problems that may occur with Spathiphyllum Bingo Cupido

• Leaves suddenly droop: Check the potting mix before adding water. If the pot feels light and the mix is dry, water thoroughly and let the pot drain completely; drooping while the mix is still wet points instead to stressed or damaged roots.
• Several leaves turn yellow: One ageing outer leaf is normal, but widespread yellowing with persistently wet mix usually means the roots are staying too wet. Let the upper layer begin to dry and check drainage. See the yellow-leaf guide if the pattern is unclear.
• Brown tips or edges develop: Repeated drying, very dry air and mineral or fertiliser salts can all mark the leaf tips. Water more consistently, raise humidity if the room is dry and occasionally flush the pot with low-mineral water.
• The plant collapses and roots are dark or soft: Dark, soft roots or a sour-smelling root ball indicate rot rather than thirst. Remove damaged roots with clean, disinfected tools, discard the rotted material and repot into fresh, airy mix; the root-rot guide covers the full process.
• Leaves become silvered, speckled or distorted: Inspect new growth and leaf undersides for thrips, mites or mealybugs. Isolate an infested plant, remove what you can by wiping or rinsing, then use a product labelled for the pest and repeat at the interval stated on the label. • Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
