Selenicereus wercklei is a tropical vining cactus with slender green stems and a smooth trailing outline. Its long, flexible stems can hang from a pot, move along a shelf or be guided loosely on a support.
This species is native to Costa Rica and belongs to the epiphytic Selenicereus group, with stems growing among other vegetation in wet tropical habitats. In a pot, bright filtered light, warmth, airy drainage and careful watering keep the stems firmer and reduce wet-root stress.
Selenicereus wercklei extends from long, flexible stems that naturally fall or wander beyond the pot edge. A hanging pot gives the stems space to lengthen, while a loose support can guide individual stems upward.
The stems benefit from an open root zone and steady warmth. A compact wet mix around the base of the plant raises the risk of soft growth and rot, especially during cooler periods.
Keep Selenicereus wercklei away from pets and small children and avoid ingestion. The stems are spineless, but damaged cactus tissue should still be handled cleanly during pruning or propagation.
Selenicereus wercklei is an accepted species in Cactaceae, originally published by Britton and Rose in The Cactaceae in 1920. The genus name refers to Selene, the moon, and points to the night-opening flowers associated with Selenicereus cacti.
Selenicereus wercklei extends long, smooth green cactus stems from hanging pots in warm, filtered light.
