Selenicereus wercklei brings a bold, untamed look to your indoor collection. Native to Costa Rica’s humid lowland rainforests, this epiphytic cactus sends out long, wiry stems that grow fast and twist freely – making it ideal for hanging pots, high shelves, or vertical trellises. Its pencil-thin stems can exceed 3 m when mature, and remain soft, flexible, and spineless for most of their life, making it both dramatic and easy to handle indoors.
The real star moment? Its massive, fragrant, moonlit flowers. These creamy white blooms open only at night and fade by morning, echoing the rhythms of its natural home where bats and moths are the pollinators. While rare indoors, this floral event is unforgettable when it does happen.
Selenicereus wercklei is native to the dense, moisture-rich forests of Costa Rica, where it grows as an epiphyte anchored to tree trunks. These regions maintain warm temperatures year-round (18 – 29 °C) with high humidity and rainfall exceeding 2,000 mm. Indoors, the plant remains compact in pots but will stretch dramatically if given room and support. Despite its cactus lineage, it thrives in bright, filtered light and needs consistently warm, stable care to grow well.
This species climbs or trails depending on support. You can let it drape from pots or train it upward – its aerial roots naturally cling to surfaces but don’t need misting or mounting. For best results, replicate its natural rhythms: steady warmth, filtered light, occasional dry spells, and stable humidity.
This cactus is non-toxic to pets and humans but best kept out of reach due to its long stems and occasional bristling in older growth.
The genus name Selenicereus combines “Selene” (Greek moon goddess) and “cereus” (Latin for waxy or torch-like), referencing its luminous night-blooming flowers. The species epithet wercklei honors German-Costa Rican botanist Karl Wercklé. Originally described by F.A.C. Weber, this species was reassigned to Selenicereus by Britton and Rose in 1920.
