Rhaphidophora tetrasperma variegata 'Mint'

Name and natural range of Rhaphidophora tetrasperma variegata 'Mint'

In the wild, Rhaphidophora tetrasperma grows across the Malay Peninsula, from southern Thailand into Peninsular Malaysia. The vine attaches to trees and rocky forest surfaces.

The cultivated form is marketed under the name 'Mint'.

Indoor care for Rhaphidophora tetrasperma variegata 'Mint'

• Support: Guide the stem up a pole, narrow board or trellis and extend the support before the vine starts to trail.
• Light: Bright indirect light suits the plant. Increase direct sun gradually because the palest areas can scorch first.
• Watering: Let part of the mix dry and lift the pot. Water when it feels lighter, wet the mix thoroughly and empty any water left in an outer pot.
• Potting mix: Use a loose mix with both coarse and moisture-holding material. Choose a pot that closely fits the current root system.
• Warmth, humidity and airflow: Keep the plant warm and away from cold draughts. Moderate humidity helps new leaves unfold. Gentle airflow helps crowded growth dry after watering.
• Feeding: Feed according to the fertiliser label while new leaves are forming.
• Propagation: Take a cutting with at least one healthy node and visible mint markings on the stem. Mint markings can vary after propagation.
• Repotting and slower growth: Repot when roots are crowded, the mix has compacted or the pot starts needing water unusually often. When growth pauses, stop feeding and let the mix dry a little further between waterings.

Common issues with Rhaphidophora tetrasperma variegata 'Mint'

• Several leaves yellow while the pot stays heavy and slow to dry: Inspect the roots before feeding again. Remove soft dark roots with a clean tool and cut back to firm healthy tissue. Discard the rotten material and repot in fresh, well-draining mix.
• Pale areas bleach or brown after a sudden increase in light: Move the plant back from the strongest exposure and reintroduce brighter light gradually. Trim only fully dead tissue.
• Several leaves and the nearby stem stay fully green: Check whether the stem still shows the mint pattern. If the green growth continues for several leaves, cut back to a healthy patterned section. One greener leaf can be left to develop.
• A new shoot becomes almost cream and starts to weaken: Allow the next leaf to open while the stem remains firm. If the pale growth continues with very little green and the shoot becomes weaker, cut back to a healthy section with clear green tissue.
• Distorted leaves carry silver scars and black specks: Check the folds and both leaf surfaces for thrips. If thrips are confirmed, isolate the plant, use a treatment labelled for thrips on indoor ornamental plants and repeat it at the stated interval.
