The natural home of Rhaphidophora tetrasperma lies in Peninsular Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. There it climbs trees and rock in wet tropical forest.

In cultivation, this product is a white-variegated form of Rhaphidophora tetrasperma.

Care for Rhaphidophora tetrasperma albo-variegata

• Support: Guide the stem up a pole or trellis and extend the support before the vine starts to trail.
• Light: Bright indirect light suits the plant. Introduce direct sun gradually because white and cream areas can scorch after a sudden increase.
• Watering: Water when the pot feels lighter and the mix has partly dried. Water thoroughly, let excess water drain and avoid severe dry spells that can crisp pale areas.
• Potting mix and repotting: Use a loose, well-draining mix in a pot close to the current root size. Repot when roots are crowded, the mix has compacted or the plant becomes unstable.
• Warmth and humidity: Keep the plant warm. Normal household humidity is usually suitable; extra humidity can help pale new leaves unfold in very dry air.
• Feeding: Feed according to the fertiliser label while the plant is growing. Use moderate doses because salt buildup can brown pale tissue.
• Propagation: Take a cutting with at least one healthy node that shows both green and a pale marking. White coverage can vary on the rooted shoot.
• Slower growth: When growth pauses, stop feeding and let the mix dry a little further between waterings. Resume normal watering and feeding when fresh growth starts again.

• White areas turn brown while the green parts stay firm: Sudden sun, a missed watering, fertiliser salts or hot, dry air can affect pale areas first. • Several new leaves and the nearby stem become solid green: Check the stem for remaining white or cream markings. If plain-green growth continues, cut the vine back to the last healthy patterned section. The new growth can still look different.
• A new shoot is almost completely white and stops growing: Allow the next leaf to open while the stem stays firm. If the growth remains almost entirely white and weak, cut back to a healthy section with clear green tissue.
• Yellowing and softness spread from the base: Expose the roots and cut away every rotten area with a clean tool. Rhaphidophora combines Greek rhaphis, meaning needle, with phorein, meaning to bear, referring to the needle-like raphide crystals in its tissues. Tetrasperma combines Greek tetra, four, with sperma, seed.

Justus Carl Hasskarl established the genus Rhaphidophora in 1842 in Flora, volume 25, issue 2, supplement 1, page 11.

Joseph Dalton Hooker first described Rhaphidophora tetrasperma in 1893 in The Flora of British India, volume 6, page 548.
