Origin and botanical background

Wild Pteris parkeri, the species behind the Pink selection, occurs in South Korea and central Taiwan as well as central and southern Japan. Populations grow on soil or rock around temperate to subtropical woodland margins, shaded disturbed ground and slopes.

Pink is a naturally coloured selection of the familiar pale-striped fern. Its rosy juvenile colour matures towards cream and green. Its botanical origin is the same East Asian species as other cultivated forms of P. parkeri.

Moisture and airflow for healthy fronds

Feeding, root care and propagation: Use low-strength fertiliser while new fronds are forming. Wait until the rhizome carries several established crowns, then separate only pieces with roots and an active growing point. Division preserves the natural pink-to-cream-and-green colour progression more reliably than raising plants from spores.

Light, watering and temperature: Naturally pink new fronds expand best under bright, indirect light or light shade. Strong, dry sunlight can scorch this pale new tissue before it hardens, while deep shade weakens the fronds. Moderate to cool room temperatures suit it; hot, dry air can crisp the leaflet margins. New fronds naturally emerge rosy and mature towards cream and green. This is normal development and does not mean the fern needs stronger sun. Keep the first weeks after delivery stable rather than moving it into stronger light to hold the pink colour.

Watering, root care and humidity: Grow it in a humus-rich, freely drained mix kept consistently lightly moist. Complete drying can crisp or collapse the fine leaflets, but a saturated, airless root zone damages the roots and crown. Higher humidity helps new fronds expand cleanly, provided the foliage is not left wet in stagnant air. Soft or low-mineral water limits deposits and salt loading. Keep the crown at the surface rather than planting it deeply.

What to do when problems appear

Rosy new fronds naturally mature towards cream and green. This normal change does not mean the colour is failing or the fern needs stronger sun. Pale tissue needs attention when it becomes papery tan, translucent or black. Papery areas suggest scorch or severe drying, while soft, dark damage points to cold or excess moisture. Stabilise filtered light and evaluate the next frond.

Fine leaflet margins can crisp when roots dry too far, dissolved salts build up or warm air is very dry. A frond that blackens at its base while the mix stays wet indicates crown or root trouble. Keep the crown at the surface, restore aeration and remove only clearly decayed tissue. Do not keep the core wetter in an attempt to preserve the pink stage.

Orderly brown spore lines beneath mature fronds are normal. Irregular bumps, sticky residue, cottony wax, fine webbing or moving specks indicate scale, mealybugs or mites. Move the fern away from nearby foliage after confirming an infestation, then choose a product suitable for ferns and pale leaves. Test first, protect treated fronds from strong light and judge success from clean new growth rather than old feeding scars.

About the name Pteris parkeri

Pteris is the ancient Greek name for a fern and is related to pteron, meaning wing or feather. The epithet parkeri honours nurseryman J. J. Parker of the Rose Nursery in Whetstone, United Kingdom.
